So, you want to have six pack abs, but don't have the time to drive all the way across town every day to go to the gym.  Or simply cannot afford the monthly membership fees.  Or you can't deal with using equipment that is dripping in somebody elses sweat.  Whatever the reason, you can learn how to get a six pack without all the fancy gym equipment most people think is necessary.

Lose Belly Fat

If you want to uncover great abs, you need to get rid of all the fat that is covering them up.  If you get rid of all the excess fat you are carrying around, you will great abs even if you don't do anything to build up your abdominal muscles.

The first thing you need to do to lose fat is eat healthy.  You have to reduce the calories you consume.  There are tons of diets out there so find one that works for you and stick with it.  Make it a lifestyle choice not just a short term diet.  Do things like adding a vegetable to every meal and have fruits or nuts for snacks instead of candy bars.  You should also drink as much water as possible.  Try to drink at least a gallon a day.  This will help you stay hydrated, get rid of toxins in your body, and eliminate feelings of hunger when you are simply thirsty.

The other part of losing belly fat is to burn more calories.  This is where cardio comes in.  Most people turn to simple cardio like jogging or walking on the treadmill for hours.  Don't fall into this trap.  You need to have intense exercise.  The best way to crank up the intensity is to do some sort of interval training.  This simply means varying the intensity of your exercise.

For example, if you want to run start out by walking to warm up for a couple minutes, then jog for a couple minutes, then sprint for a minute or two.  Once you are done sprinting, go back to walking and start the process over.  The sprinting will really get your heart pumping.  While you walk then job, you will catch your breath so you are ready for another sprint, but your heart rate will stay up since you are continuing to move.  This will give you a killer workout and kick your fat burning into overdrive.

You don't have to run.  You can do this kind of training with any exercise so apply it to your favorite type of cardio like bike riding or stair climbing.

Build Muscle

Now I said above that you can get great abs just by losing fat, but if you are going to go through the work of losing fat, you might as well build strong muscles too.  First of all, muscle burns more calories 24 hours a day so you will increase your fat burning efforts by building a little extra muscle.  Second, you will look and feel great!

Just like with cardio, you don't need to go to the gym to get a great workout.  There are tons of exercises you can do to build muscle without any special gym equipment.  Exercises like body weight squats, lunges, push ups, pull ups, and ab exercises will give you a great muscle building workout without ever picking up a dumbbell.

If you are looking for something different, you can do things like rope climbing or even strongman exercises.  You know, the ones from the World's Strongest Man competitions you see on ESPN where those huge guys carry around boulders and pull cars.  Set up a little course for yourself and have fun with it.

Key to Success

The key to success is to plan your workouts and have fun.  Since you won't be using traditional exercise equipment, you may have to think about and plan your workout more than normal, but since you won't be driving to the gym, you will still be saving a lot of time.  Just make sure you are smart about what you are doing and don't do something that will get you hurt.

You should always check with your doctor before starting any new diet or exercise program to make sure you are healthy and there aren't any health concerns you need to be aware of.  Other than that, good luck and have fun building a better body!

This hub is so on the money. Too many people are concentrating on all the muscle building exercises and forgetting about considering what they are eating and how to get rid of the layer of fat over their abs.

I would also add that motivation is so important. If you have weak motivation you may give up when it gets hard. I always encourage people to really visualize how good they will feel when they are walking around with that six pack, and use that visualization when the going gets tough.
