So Simple You're Wonder "Why Didn't I think I of That"

I love home grown Big Boy tomatoes!! There is something more tasteful about tomatoes grown in you own domain. All gardening requires some work and the reward of producing your own food is far greater and the reward you get when you go to the Piggly Wiggly and rumble thru a bunch of rumbled tomatoes.

My current living situation does not allow me to have a garden and I have tried growing tomatoes in pots but that never worked. If you live in an apartment with a deck or have a small yard YOU CAN grow your own tomatoes!! I will gladly show you how.

Item you will need..

 1.  Tomato Plant

 2.  Hanging Basket

 3.  Potting Soil

how simple is that!

Essentials needed. I chose this type of pot so I could cut a hold in the mesh lining and this type of lining in pots will help protect the roots. You can use any pot of 3 gallons or more. Just cut a hole in the bottom just large enough the the pla

Day 4

4 days after planting my tomatoes and peppers they started to grow up, towards the sun.  Gravity in Motion.  Moving the tomatoe plant to fuller sun may help but I am going to leave it alone and see what happens.  When the plant gets heavier it may vine in the other direction.  Although, you can see significant growth in a very short period of time.

Day 4

After a few days the plant starts to grow upwards toward the sun.

Actually, I seen this wierd thing on late night TV for sale that would grow tomatoes plants upside down for bigger tomatoes because the tomatoe itself would get more nutrients and I said "I can do that" very simple. Cant wait to see how it turns out.

Wonderful idea. It totally beats buying that commercial container offered on TV, which costs more and is absolutely ugly to look at. I have exactly these hanging baskets and new sisal mats as well. I'm hanging my tomatoes this year. Brilliant!

Very cool. I just started mine on my porch. I'll let you know how it goes :) I eat a tomato a day (at least) so I figured I might as well grow my own than buy them from the farmer's market!

Thanks TamCor! I have really enjoyed doing it. I am embarrased to say that this is the first time I grew tomatos! You get use to mom doing and bringing you tons of produce, but it was time I tried it myself. Planting them upside down was so fun, I wasn't sure it was going to work but wow it did, I will post more pictures as the maters grow!!

Hi dori, Think that I'll link this to my gargantuan tomato hub if you don't mind. Question.......since it is in a hanging basket, do you have to water it daily?

fortunerep profile image

fortunerep  says:

I tried this and did a few things wrong - It was cruel to that poor plant. I may try again now. I love tomatoes.

lol Pastor, If you do try it again, plant the tomatos in a larger container than I did, they did produce but got root bounds. Hope you do try again, that is how we learn!

I've grown "Gardener's Delight" tomatoes successfully in pots but next year I'm going to try your method as well!

Cool creative way to do tomatoes and other balcony grown veggies.. and also, you have a serious interest in writing...

I may try the tomatoes some day, because where i live it's impossible to get tomatoes larger than the size of your heel.

And much of the time they haven't been vine ripened, but are still very green or yellow, and possibly won't ever achieve that rich drooly flavor that is so common in North America and elsewhere.

Thanks, Bruce

You should try it, I am sure it will even grow inside. Thanks for comment, let me know if you try it and how it goes.
