The Banks and Credit Cards

President Obama's Credit Card Bill of Rights has provisions contained in it to protect credit card users from scrupulous bank practices that causes unexpected rate hikes and unneccesary fees. Banks have been abusing the average consumer with higher monthly payments for late payments and added fees for just about every auxilliary transaction. Credit cards will no longer be legally issued to anyone under the age of 21 years of age.

President Obama, however, can not sat at your kitchen table with a shoebox of bills and sift through your credit card debt as a helpmate. You are responsible for your own credit card debt. Here is advice to help you take care and get a handle on to your credit card obligations.

Most people own at least one credit card. Note the word own as in possessive need for regulation.  Credit cards are used for various reasons and the reasons are not always looked upon as one of responsibility. These steps are suggested that you follow to put responsibility in your usage of credit cards and to get a handle on to your credit card debt.

Read Your Credit Card Member Agreement

Read your member agreement and monthly statement thoroughly so that you are familiar with the terms and conditions of owning the credit card. Owning the credit card should be respected by reading the member agreement. The agreement will explain service charges and late fees. The most important aspect you will learn by reading the member agreement is the payment due date and  when the payment will be credited to your account. The member agreement will reflect any policy changes and updates of the credit card company. The passage of the Credit Card Bill of Rights will greatly change the way banks deal with consumers. Now it is even more important that you read the member agreement. If you have several credit cards, you have to read each member agreement as each credit card is managed by the banks  with different terms and conditions.

Reduce Costly Uses of the Credit Card

Credit card services can be costly because of its many uses. Credit cars can be used to get cash from the bank with costly cash advances, convenience checks, and payments over the telephone. Curtail using these added features of the credit card as transaction fees are charged with each use. If the cost of using the credit card online is less expensive than using the telephone, then use the online method of taking care of your credit card matters. Online usage of the credit card is more likely to be less inexpensive because of the absence of the bank having to use customer service agents and other expenses.

Pay Your Credit Card On Time

Do not pay your credit card bill around the first of the month. Around the first of the month is an estimate and the member agreement clearly lets you know when your credit card payment is due. Going Places publication reports that payment dates are generally set a number of days from the last billing date. One of your credit card payments may be due at the first of the month and another at the middle of the month. Respect the exact date of your credit card obligation and pay the credit card debt on time. Use the online method of payment for convenience that is less of a hassle than mailing your credit card payment. You are responsible for your credit card debt.
