When homeschooling preschool, remember to keep it simple and fun! Preschoolers can learn everything they need to know through fun games and activities, and living life with their parents.

Let your child help you around the house and accompany you on errands. Treat your preschooler like your little helper and best buddy. Here are some other tips for homeschooling a preschooler.

1. Read to your child daily.

The best way to teach a child to read is to help your child enjoy books and stories. Put away the videos and flashcards, and read to your child daily. Read both fiction and nonfiction books. Ask your child to retell the story in his or her own words.

When your child is ready, find fun ways to teach letters and their sounds. Make an alphabet book or collage, go on an scavenger hunt for items that begin with a specific letter, use your fingers to write letters in sand or shaving cream, or play with alphabet magnets. Here are some additional preschool alphabet activities.

2. Look for everyday opportunities to teach math.

Math is part of the language of the world around us. Point out shapes and colors as you encounter them during your day. Let your child help you count the number of cans to put in the grocery cart or the number of days until an important event.

Your child can learn a number of mathematical concepts by helping you in the kitchen. Here are some tips for teaching preschool math. Here are some preschool math activities.

3. Spend plenty of time outdoors.

Make outdoor time a regular part of your day. In addition to burning off an abundant supply of energy, your child will be learning about his or her environment. Run around in the back yard, take a trip to the park, or go on a nature walk.

4. Help your child develop fine motor skills.

Although some preschoolers love to write, many do not have the fine motor skills necessary for pencil control and writing. Developing the small muscles in the fingers, hands and wrists will give your child the skills needed for writing.

5. Enjoy your child!

When teaching preschool at home, you are providing your child with a foundation for learning. These years should be delightful for both you and your child.

Add fun to your day through:

You'll have plenty of time for workbooks and seatwork when your child is older. The preschool years pass far too quickly. Take care to make them both memorable and enjoyable!
