How to Avoid Slicing the Ball

Defining the Golf Slice and How to Improve on It

What is golf slice and what can you do to fix it, and how can you improve on it, or avoid it altogether, as some golfers are tempted to do.

So what is exactly is the golf slice, and why is it so maligned among so many golfers. A golf slice is simply a kind of ball flight. The golf slice is related to the way that you hit the ball. One of the most common types of golf slices is when a golf ball slices to the right. That means that the golf ball is curving into the sky in a left-right motion. This type of golf slice is related to a ball that is spinning upon impact in a clockwise direction.

What Kind of Impact is Necessary for a Golf Slice?

The most common type of impact responsible for this type of golf slice occurs when the ball is spinning upon impact. More specifically, the ball is spinning clockwise. This means that the club has been swung towards the left of the golf ball, thus causing the clockwise spin. This causes the ball to curve left to right in the sky, thus causing a slice. You can often confirm this type of slice simply by inspecting the divot. If you inspect the divot closely after this type of slice, you will see that the divot is pointing to the left.

How Does Your Grip Play into Producing a Slice?

The way that you grip your golf club has a lot to do with whether you will be prone to hitting slices or not. Although your grip is not directly related to the direction of the slice, it is directly related to where your clubface hits the ball. Every golfer's grip is a little different, and it can be difficult to diagnose grip-slice connections, because the same grip might produce very different results in the hands of different golfers. Still, there are some things you can do with your grip that can help you avoid golf slices.

How to Hold Your Golf Club to Avoid Slicing the Ball

In general, try to avoid holding your club so that your hands are turned to the far left of your club. This grip is well known to produce ball slices. Here are some tips for gripping the club so that you can avoid slicing the ball. When you get into your golf stance, make sure your clubface is held squarely against the target. Try to get into the orthodox V grip, wherein your fingers should be in a V shape and pointing towards your right shoulder.

Getting into the Proper Stance to Avoid Slicing the Ball

Another thing to consider if you want to avoid slicing the ball is to take a good hard look at your golf stance. Pay close attention to what is going on with your stance when you hit a slice. Do you aim too far to the left? Do you aim too far to the right? Golf slices are usually a form of overcompensating. Experiment with different stances. If you find that a stance result in ball curving less to the right, continue to adjust. One way to check your stance is to check your aim. Start by laying your club against the ground. Hold your golf club parallel to your target line. Use this as a guideline to check your aim. If possible, have a friend or player check your aim, since it can be difficult to gauge this for yourself sometimes.
