How to Increase Vertical Jump - What You Need to Know
60Are you a frustrated athlete who's trying to figure out how to jump high but can't seem to figure out how to increase vertical jump no matter what you do? Or are you a coach who needs to show your players how to jump higher in basketball, volleyball or some other sport but you haven't found a method that gets you the kind of results you're hoping for?
If this describes you, there's a good chance that you've found some basic information by doing some web research. However, most of this information is incomplete. It's not necessarily bad, it's just not getting you where you want to go. It's a little bit like having a car with no gas; it's just not going to get you there. In this article we'll look at a few of the basic cornerstones regarding how to jump high. We will also look at a few of the gaps that are commonly present in people's jumping workouts and overall efforts when they try to find ways to jump higher.
Clearly any kind of jumping workouts will involve working your legs. But before you or your athletes get into any exercises, important to do proper warm-up especially if your efforts are geared towards trying to learn how to dunk a basketball. Any jumping program worth its salt is going to stress the warm-up and flexibility aspects before getting into any kind of weight training or plyometric exercises. You have to make sure that you prevent any injury and allow for long-term health and training.
How to Jump Higher - From the Horses Mouth
One great way of warming up is through the use of a jump rope. Jump ropes not only get the heart pounding, the blood flowing and the limbs limbered up, but it works your calves really well which are critical, and often overlooked, when it comes to vertical leaping. Flexibility is also very important. Without flexibility a tight hip flexor will not allow for full extension at the hip, just like tight hamstrings won't allow for full extension at the knee. Both of these hindrances will prevent you from maximizing your vertical jumping abilities and could lead to various long-term injuries of the knee, ankle or even chronic back pain.
Learn the Secrets of Jumping Higher Here!
Leg exercises such as bodyweight squats, weighted squats with Olympic weights or dumbbells, and lunges and plyometric leaping are all critical components to learning ways to jump higher. However, done incorrectly, you could actually impede your own progress. Or worse yet, you could actually injure yourself. This is why getting training from a qualified coach is very important. Not only do you need to have good form with your exercises, but form is critical in your actual jumping as well. Proper jumping form alone can potentially increase your vertical by 2 to 4 inches right away.
Form, Function, Dedication and Effort
It is no doubt about it, if you want to increase your vertical jump a lot it's going to take a lot of work. Along with a lot of training you need a proper nutrition plan. This is something that is very often overlooked if not completely ignored in many jumping programs. Proper diet can help you recover faster and more completely between workouts allowing you to make better, faster progress. Also, if you're carrying around extra weight (do you need to lose body fat fast?), that's only going to work to keep you earthbound rather than getting some serious hops.
We mentioned jumping form and nutrition as two components to any program that intends to show you ways to jump higher. There are actually seven more individual and separate pieces of the puzzle when it comes to vertical leaping. Without all of them organized in the proper way, you might make some progress but probably not as much progress as you would like or as quickly as you would like. That's why it's important to look for a complete jumping program when you ask yourself the question, "how can I jump higher?"
What Can You Achieve By Following The Right Plan?
If you find, follow and implement a complete jumping plan, you will be amazed at the kind of results you can get. Even if you haven't been naturally gifted with a 6 foot six inch (plus) NBA type body, that doesn't mean you can't be throwing down some impressive dunks, crushing volleyball spikes, or towering soccer headers... if you have any doubt, just take a look at this guy. At 5'5", this guy can fly after following the proper kind of jumping program (watch the video of him showing how to dunk).
All you have to do now is decide whether that's the kind of vertical leaping ability you want to have and whether you're willing to pay the price in dedication and training to know how to jump high and how to dunk (or whatever you want to do with your new vertical leaping abilities).
