How to Keep Your Husband From Ruining the Laundry

He Thinks He's Doing You a Favor

I love how thoughtful and considerate my husband is. A couple of the reasons (among many) why I agreed to marry him. I work weekends as a Registered Nurse and he completely takes care of the kids (without complaining) when I work. I work long hours and typically go to work at 6am and get home around 7:30pm.  My husband works Monday through Friday.

My husband always tries to keep things in order while I am at work.  A hard feat as I can barely keep things in order when he is at work.  He is a very creative housekeeper.  The other day I picked up the swiffer; apparently we were out of the pads that go on it so he attached a washcloth to it to clean up something (what'd I tell you creative eh).  I always tell him how I love his creative housekeeping.  I always find his ingenious projects on Monday mornings when I am still exhausted from work, most of the time it makes my laugh; sometimes it doesn't.

I would never tell him not to do any housework.  No kidding, a husband who has no problem taking care of kids, and doing housework.  A rare find, at least so I am told.  I am probably guilty for taking advantage of this, and I joke that he just keeps me around for the paycheck; sometimes he doesn't disagree.

How to Ensure He does the Laundry Properly

The one chore I tell my husband not to do. He still does.  For the most part he doesn't ruin things; at least not as much as he used to. Here are the things that have made a difference.

  • I made him replace my old washer and dryer. The old one was the cheapest one we could get as newly weds. It got where it left rust stains on clothes and the dryer frequently chewed stuff up when he used it. I had some tricks that I used to not get the clothes stained or chewed up but he never listened.
  • I insist that he not wash my uniforms. I wear white to work at the hospital. Uniforms have gotten really expensive now. He never touches the uniforms.
  • I hide the bleach.
  • I let him use non chlorine bleach only.
  • I buy Tide. It is the only detergent that I have found that gets most of the stains out and keeps clothes from wearing and fading.
  • I refold everything and put it away properly. He doesn't know this; oops I guess he will if he reads this.
  • Most Important: Praise him until he gets sick of it!

LOL nice hub Tammy. My husband also washes our clothes but there are some things he cannot do like hanging the clothes and folding them. Those are part of my job. He used to hang the clothes and fold them but I didn't like his style so he passed them on to me instead. I should have kept my mouth shut LOL. thanks for the hub. It's fun to read especially the last part.

Aw, what a precious picture, that's my first response even before reading the hub, now I go back and read the hub. You, young lady, have hit the mother load, with this young man, don't ever stop praising him sincerely, letting him know just how special he is. And believe me he is. Very good hub, and hubby.

Tammy, it certainly sounds like the two of you have been able to manage your work schedules to the best for your situation. One works weekdays one works weekends. I assume that leaves childcare for the most part with one parent or other. That in itself is rare!

Your Question - How to keep your husband from ruining the laundry? My answer - for years it was to make sure I did it myself. I will give him credit - he did try. But hmmm, didn't work out too well. There did eventually come a time when he wanted to learn, and then it was easy.

So maybe the question should be How to ensure your husband wants to learn how to do the laundry correctly? Or is that leaving it too open to interpretation?

How right you are to always praise a husband's efforts. I am afraid I completly lost it when my husband washed my purple skirt and my underwear together. We were going through a poverty patch - and all my undies turned a blotchy pink.

TL - I got a laugh out of this hub of yours ! It reminded me of the time I thought to do my wife a big (BIG) favor and wash a bunch of stuff in the machine. Everything came out pink. Doggone socialist dirty stuff. That's what it was ! :-)))

Well well, how lucky you are-my sweet and dear other half has never ever used a washing machine ,dryer or dishwasher-but-- when he does stack the dirty dishes he will always say''Did you notice the nice job I did on the dishes-you see it's all about order''-he has many other qualities,I must say-houswork-no-it happens.

I mess up the laundry a few times a year. My wife always has certain things that can't go in the dryer. And well I do the laundry a lot. So eventually I don't notice the one shirt among all of the other clothes and I get an earful. I'm not good at folding but, it is acceptable. At least I never saw my wife refold it anyway.

Oh great husband story about this! About two weeks ago I could have killed my husband! He was doing laundry and MIXED darks and lights AND used BLEACH! Well when I got home fixing to do laundry what did I find? About 3 towels with bleach stains. Two of my shirts completly ruined and a shirt or two of the kids completly ruined. Had to throw them away. I asked him how much bleach he used, he said "well I poured a little bit in and it didn't look like enough, so I poured more in about a CUP 1/2! I got the bleach down it was almost gone! Now it's funny but then I was FURIOUS! I fobided him to do laundry again. He has and yes he still mixes darks and lights! GRRR whats a woman to do?! Ha Ha

Tammy,

How funny and You are very lucky in these days to have a man who helps out. I would even let this one do the laundry, but he cant even pick up his clothes from the floor.
