How to Lay Tile: The Basics of Tile Laying For a More Even Finish

A lot of people think that laying tiles is a very simple to do do-it-yourself task. Most think that laying tiles is a task that doesn’t need a lot of preparation and that it doesn’t require any special skills do. However, you have to consider the fact that tile laying does require some skills and also requires a lot of preparations. If you don’t take proper care whenever you are laying tiles, then you will end up with an uneven finish that will look really ugly.

You might even get a finish that is so uneven that you may even trip on the tiles. So, how do you lay tiles properly? The first is by preparing the surfaces well enough. It is very important to prepare the surface that you wish to install the tiles in properly. You need to clean it and smooth it thoroughly before you lay the tiles in. If you save time on this step, then it will lead to an uneven finish and unstable tiles that can easily break.

When putting tiles on walls, it is important that any foreign coatings as well as wallpapers should be first removed. Grouting is also an important step in tiling. Many people are always in a hurry that they tend to spread the grout unevenly and too quickly. The proper technique for grouting is to spread the grout evenly on the surface as well as slowly.

You should also use a support tool like a squeegee in order to make sure that you spread the grout evenly. Also, avoid grouting large areas. If you do, then the area where you first applied the grout in may dry out before you actually install the tiles. Grouting too quickly can also lead to uneven finish. It is also important to remove excess grout right after laying a tile. If you don't then the excess grout will dry up and will be very hard to remove.

Dotting corners is also another mistake that would-be tile layers do. There are people who believe that adding dots of adhesive can achieve a stronger bond. However, this is a mistake as the adhesives shrinks as it dries. This actually increases the pressure on the tile and will have a far greater chance of cracking. Choosing the adhesive is also an important step.

If you are laying tiles on humid rooms, such as the bathroom or swimming pools, you will want to use a waterproof adhesive. Even well-fitted tiles can let some water get through the wrong adhesive, which will cause crumbling and weakening the adhesives. Checking for mistakes right after you laid the tiles is also an important step when tiling. You have to remember that as a first-timer in laying tiles, you shouldn’t expect to have a flawless finish.

Try to check and recheck the laid tiles during the first 6 to 12 hours when the grout is still soft or wet. If you misplaced a tile and you left it there for more than 24 hours, then you will have difficulty fixing it as the grout will already have hardened. Another common mistake that first-time would be tile layers do is buying the exact amount of tiles they need. However, you have to buy about 5 to 10 percent more of the actual tiles you need. You have to remember that you will eventually make mistakes and break several tiles on the process. With extra tiles, you don’t have to worry about shortage of tiles. These are some of the basics of laying tiles.

So, if you plan on doing a tiling project in your house, always remember that preparation is always the key to achieving a perfect and even finish on tiles.
