Is Magic Science?

The art of magic is different than the sciences. Science is based on observational facts while magic is surrounded by mystery. As a magician, once you know the secret - i.e., how to deceive your audience - you are like the hero in a movie. You know all, yet your audience is mystified. You would be surprised at how easy it is to fool educated adult audiences. In fact, it's easier to trick adults than kids because adults are biased by their experiences and pre-conceived ideas about how things should work. Kids often see right through it.

What Kinds of Tricks Are There?

There are many kinds of magic tricks. Some require extensive setup and props while others need no skill and very little practice to master. And, of course, there are many in between which need some level of skill and some kind of prop. Magic tricks can be done with playing cards, coins, bills, rings, handkerchiefs, balls, eggs, and many other everyday objects. Some tricks just require you to use your brain (e.g., mentalism).

What Do I need to Know to Do Magic Tricks?

You need to know two things: cause and effect. The effect is what the audience sees - what you want them to see. The cause is what you did to make it happen. The audience, if you did it right, doesn't see the cause. You need to master both!

Does Magic Require a Lot of Practice?

Of course, the old saying "practice makes perfect" applies. Practice, above all else, is how to learn magic tricks. Some tricks don't require that much practice to get started. You can master more complicated magic tricks, how to do sleight of hand for example, by practicing for a few minutes a day for a month. But, you can get started with magic in just 10-15 minutes.
