How to Locate a Quality Texas Electric Provider
73First Develop a List of All Texas Electric Companies
When shopping for a quality Texas electric provider you first need to know who they are. The easiest way to obtain all active retail electric provider market participants operating in Texas is to go to the Texas Public Utility Commissions website or the Texas Power To Choose website. You can type in your zipcode and it will pull up all active electric providers advertising in your area along with their energy rate, phone number, address, and special terms and conditions. The electricity facts label will also be listed which is very similar to the food label on the back of a can of food. Just as the food label is required to accurately list the ingredients on a can of food the electricity facts label must also list the correct electric rate information in a Texas electric providers energy rate. Looking at the Texas electricity facts label will help in narrowing down which electric rate is hiding additional fees which will allow you determine the quality Texas power companies that offer affordable energy without all the extra fees.
Pay Attention to Extra Fees in Texas Electric Rate
Once you have the Texas electric provider list and have reviewed the electric facts label for each company you will want to pay careful attention to the kWh rate and the monthly service charge. There will also sometimes be a monthly meter read fee some Texas power companies will charge on top of the monthly meter fee. You can divide these fees by your average kilowatt hours you use in a month to determine what that will add on to the per kilowatt hour rate the energy company quotes you. You can make it a little simpler by not even considering the electric companies in Texas that have a meter fee or monthly service charge on top of the energy price.
Review Energy Site for Company History, Billing, and Customer Service
Once you have narrowed down the cheapest Texas electric providers you can go to their corporate website and see if and who they have their billing systems and customer service desks outsourced to. If they are outsourcing the work to India you may find yourself having some customer service issues due to absentee management not keeping tabs on the quality of work being done in an out of country helpdesk and backoffice. A retail electric provider in Texas has to keep their business costs low but outsourcing, although cheap, can bankrupt an energy provider if the billing gets out of whack. Billing system problems with Texas electric companies have occurred with Gexa Energy, Ampro, Champion Energy, Stream Energy, and many more. This list is an example of a few providers that had billing issues but either merged with a larger energy company to get things back in control or went bankrupt like was the case with Ampro.
If you sign up on a cheap energy rate with a start up Texas electric company you may find yourself with a broken contract half way through when the company goes out of business. The fly by night company may also quick fix their billing issues by just charging everyone a little more. Because of these issues and more you want to pick a Texas electric company that has a strong history in Texas for providing quality customer service and billing. Champion Energy has fixed their issues after a debacle involved in the process of rolling over their current billing system with the company that they were bought by.
Watch Out for Fly-by-Night Power Companies
Some new companies that have recently opened up in Texas that we don't know much about are Liberty Power Company, Riverway Power, and YEP. Some of these energy companies have outsourced customer service desks in India which can cause a heap of problems for customers in the United States trying to resolve problems with disconnected management in another country.
Don't be Fooled by MLM Pyramid Companies
Other problem Texas electric companies have a totally different set of issues to watch out for. There are a few Texas power providers that are selling their electric power through an independent sales force of MLM recruits. With an MLM energy company you have to deal with the pressure of being a warm market customer that has your very friendship on the line with the person selling you the electricity if you decide to renew with a different Texas electric company. Independent sales reps that sign up customers to qualify for multi level marketing pyramid scam commissions work for energy providers like Ambit Energy, Ignite Energy, Cirro Energy, Affordable Energy, and Texpo. There may be more MLM energy providers then this in the state of Texas but this is all we know of at this time. With an MLM electric provider you have to deal with signing up on a mediocre Texas electric rate and have the pressure of a broken relationship with a friend.
Read User Reviews of Texas Electric Providers on Review Sites
A final thought on making your list of Texas electric companies may be to check out some sites that rate electric companies by user reviews. There are websites that allow users to add electric companies they like as well as rate and post user reviews about what they do and don't like about the company. User referrals are usually a good resource to narrow down your search. There are many biased energy shopping sites out their that are not a good resource but the Power To Choose site and the User review site Texas Electric Companies may help in refining the search for a quality electric provider in Texas.

I just signed up for electric service and YES its a pain to shop around for service, rates etc. but you have to do it. Ive been reading about deregukation this and that...and reader reviews of companies, good and bad. it seems to me that its the "people" that just dont know any better. I mean, if rates are that bad in houston, THEN MOVE. IF U KNOW THERE IS A CONTRACT....dont you think its a good idea to ACTUALLY read it?? None of these companies are hiding information, you just have to read. I dont know why people are so suprised about "extra" fees and cancellation fees either. If u break a CONTRACT there is a penalty. If u need "expedited" service.... there is probably a fee for that too. if people are demanding this and that your gonna have to pay for the extras. Dont be naive to think ur "special" request isnt going to cost you. Funny how people want to supersize their orders at Mcdonalds or any other eatery..and they dont complain about that extra charge. i think these people need to get off the couch, lay off the burger and fries and do some research on choosing the company that best suits them they might just end up being .... i dont know.....a satisfied customer.
Thanks for the info. I was considering Amigo Energy but I went with Ignite becuase of the lower prices.
