How to Look After Your Weimararner
70The Dog
The Weimararner, otherwise know as the ‘silver ghost’, is one of the most sophisticated, elegant and sought after breeds of dog. Famous for its agility and ability to learn, the Weimararner is becoming one of the most popular pets because of its loving and attentive nature. The only trouble you will get with a Weimaraner is if it is trained poorly as a puppy, otherwise, if cared for correctly, the dog will serve as a loyal and very cute pet!
History
Weimaraners were originally bred for German Royalty in the 19th century to hunt deer, bear and large game. Their elegant looks and their impressive hunting skills led them to be the dog of the monarchy. These dogs were strictly bred to be speedy, accurate and have amazing tracking skills. The dogs were not bred out of Germany until 1938, when the dogs were imported to the USA, which gave them room to rise and rise in popularity. Since then, the dogs have become one of the most popular domestic dogs recorded with dog societies.
Appearance
There are two main types of Weimaraner; short haired and long haired. These tend to be of a silver/grey colour which gives them their nickname. Their eyes are usually blue, a striking contrast with their lovely grey coat, but can sometimes be amber. The long haired varieties are virtually the same but with (wait for it) longer coats. This breed will obviously shed its fur more frequently. There is also a blue haired Weimaraner, whose coat is of a deeper grey, but with a very noticeable blue sheen. Sadly, these dogs are not used in competition as the breed is bred to be silver/grey, not blue/grey, even though they are just as beautiful as their grey counterparts.

Care
Caring for a Weimaraner is generally the same as caring for any other dogs. Even though the most popular breed of Weimaraner is the short-haired variety, their coats do need to be brushed every few days to remove excess dead hair. Their long ears also mean that they need to be cleaned occasionally to prevent ear mites or infection. You can do this by gently cleaning the outside area with cotton or a soft cloth. Teeth should be cleaned frequently using a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically for dogs which you can find in any good pet shop. With diet, it is important (as with all dogs) that they get a variety of nutrients. Feed your Weimaraner a mixture of meat, carbohydrates and vegetables (just like yourself!) to make sure that their diet is varied.

Exercise
Being relatively big dogs, Weimararners need plenty of exercise as they are a very athletic breed. These dogs love to play games, which is great exercise for you and your dog. It is recommended that that Weimaraners are walked twice per day to burn up energy- they have extremely high energy levels. If your Weimaraner is not getting enough exercise he will let you know; they become destructive, irritable and will bark continuously if they feel they need to burn some of their energy.

Love adorable!!!
Thanks, the one in the picture is part of our family, she's lovely.
I know what you mean J_Eds, this breed of dog needs a lot of exercise and attention, not for a family who works full time! But the effort you put in is definately worth it- these dogs give you back so much love!
