How to Lose Weight With Negative Calorie Foods
83
At the risk of being totally offensive, yet brutally honest, the fact that you are reading this, probably means you are tired of being FAT! Don't worry, I have felt the same way. I have tried every diet known to man and failed at most. Until now!
The day I learned about the concept of negative calorie foods was the day that changed my life forever. Would you like to know why? Of course you would silly, so by all means, if you have tried everything to no avail and would like to find out the honest truth about how to lose weight, then please, read on.
What is a Calorie?
As it pertains to food, a calorie is the unit of energy-producing potential in food that, if not used, is converted to fat and then stored in all those nasty little areas like our hips, thighs and buttocks. As unsightly as this becomes, calorie-rich foods sure taste good, and that is why we eat them.
Calorie conscious individuals, however, who have never been overweight a day in their lives or those who have been successful in weight loss know that in order to lose weight, one must increase energy expenditure (exercise), while decreasing energy intake (diet).
If this is so simple, then why are there 196 million Americans walking around this planet either overweight or obese? It all boils down to one thing, eating too much and exercising too little.
If you thought I was going to tell you about some sort of ground-breaking weight-loss principle, think again. If you want to lose weight, open the mouth to let food in a little less and force the body to move about a little more.
If this seems to be too difficult a concept, then maybe you need a little shove in the right direction and that is where negative calorie foods come in.
Negative Calorie Foods: The Concept
Negative calorie food is a rather misleading term, as there are no foods that are truly negative in calories. But there are foods that require more calories, or energy, to digest than they actually contain, and this is where the term "negative calorie" comes from.
When calories are harder for the body to utilize, much more energy is required to extract their caloric value. AS AN EXAMPLE ONLY, if a slice of chocolate cake contains 450 calories, it takes far less calories for our body to digest it. This results in a net gain of calories that is stored in our body as fat. Multiply this by days, weeks or months and you can imagine the magnitude.
Now, imagine a slice of celery at only 6 calories per stalk. Because celery is harder for our body to digest, it takes more calories to digest it than the food itself contains, resulting in a net loss taken from our fat stores.
If a lightbulb has just went on in your head, then you are not alone. There is something about this concept that I find very motivating. Knowledge has always meant power in my book!
How Does the Negative Calorie Effect Work?
Every piece of food that we stuff into our mouths has the following ingredients:
- Nutrients (Carbohydrates, protein, fat)
- Caloric Value (calories)
- Vitamins
- Minerals
Why is this important? Because when we eat, the vitamins and minerals in our food help our bodies to produce enzymes that aid in the digestion of that food. Negative calorie foods cause our bodies to produce even more enzymes that not only break down the particular food's own calories, but additional stored calories as well. This can stimulate effective weight loss in a relatively short period of time.

But Man Cannot Live By Negative Calories Alone!
Obviously, if we maintained a diet of negative calories alone, we would eventually starve to death! The fact of the matter is, even if we didn't starve to death, we would surely die of mouth boredom or something of the like! We must have protein, fat and carbs in our diets or we will be unbalanced and unhealthy.
To get the biggest bang out of your buck, so to speak, when you eat, along with negative calorie foods, try eating more protein and omega-3 fatty acids.
Protein requires our bodies to burn the most energy during digestion. High protein foods include meats, fish, chicken, eggs, dairy products, nuts, seeds and beans.
Omega-3 fatty acids increase our metabolism. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, halibut, herring, sardines, trout, walnuts, flax-seed oil, canola oil, tuna, shrimp, clams, catfish, cod and spinach.
In considering all three of these food sources, you can imagine that a diet rich in negative calorie foods, protein and omega-3 fatty acids is the one that is going to help our bodies burn the most calories and thus turn our bodies into literal fat burning machines. Try it for a week and see for yourself. IT WORKS!
Mix and Match Your Food
To spice up your meals and save yourself from the pits of dieting hell, try miixing and matching your foods to create exciting meals that are not only good for you, but satisfy your eager taste buds, as well.
For example, include a green salad with mixed vegies at every meal to supersize your negative calorie effect. Try stir-frying vegetables and chicken in canola oil and adding some shrimp and a dab of flaxseed oil for an addiional calorie-burning boost. . Mix some negative calorie fruit in with low-fat yogurt and some walnuts and you have an amazing, fat burning dessert. Once again, use your imagination and have fun with it. The possiblities are as endless as the sky!

You are welcome John. Thx for the comment.
Interesting - I'm with John. I had only heard about celery.
Well, let the world know that there is so much more to negative calories than celery! Thanks for your comment. I have been eating this way for a month now, have no cravings and have lost 20 lbs. I feel fantastic. Really! I hope everyone takes a bit of my enthusiasm home with them!
Wow I never even heard about celery. I've been busting my butt trying to lose weight with different techniques. Even counting calories was difficult. I don't burn a lot of calories during the day because at work I'm at the computer a lot and by the time I get home, I make dinner for my husband and I, and then go to bed. So I'll try this out. Thanks a lot!
Let us know how you do....thanks for your comment.
Very informative, thank you. However, one doesn't have to be fat to get value from this type of eating. These are healthy foods. Negative calorie, does not equal negative value. By eating a variety of these foods daily, along with healthy fats and lean proteins, anybody can be healthy, not just thin.
You are right, thanks for clarifying...
I only new about celery too.
Thanks for the list!
You are welcome....Thanks for your comment!
I ate a whole cake in a week and did not gain a pound, when I go on a diet and I stress out bout lossing the weight I gain weight like crazy. I just eat what I feel like it when I want to.
Some people just have great metabolisms, unfortunately, I am not one of them! Thx for the comment.
wow! that is an eye-opener. I always thought that losing weight means hitting the gym for a few hours a week and staying with low carb food. Definitely must try the negative calorie food to see the effect. Great hub!
I am sure that your eye opening information is not new news. But it should be more widely shared.
Our home meals are about to become even more interesting.. thanks to you!
Great article...I'm writing an exercise and nutrition article...do you mind if I link this one to mine?

Mici: I had never heard about this before but I do not believe it to be new info, good luck w/ your family meals!
Osiris: Thanks and sure, go ahead and link away!
To the last person who left the rude comment about shooting me, if you read the sentence it starts with "as an example." I did change the information so as to not mislead anyone. Thanks for your comment. If you would have toned it down a bit, I would have posted it.
Okay, I apologize, I was harsh. I just get heated about this stuff. Here's the deal, though, the article is still misleading. An apple is typically about 100 calories, and I guarantee you it doesn't take more than that to digest & assimilate it in your body. It takes about 10% of the calories consumed to break down a given food, so it probably takes about 10 calories to break down an apple, so there's no way it would qualify as 'negative calorie.'
What I do agree with is that proteins are harder to break down & assimilate, and thus, you burn more calories to consume them (about 20-25% of the total calories in the food), so, increasing protein intake does, in fact, help to increase total calorie burn.
I'm not saying your advice isn't sound--we do all need to concentrate on eating more fruits, veggies, and high-quality carbohydrates/proteins. But, by saying that all those foods on your list equate to 'negative calories' when accounting for their fuel cost to break down and assimilate, is inaccurate.
Again, I really do apologize for my previous post. I should not have been so rude.
It is ok, again, I do say the term negative calorie is misleading. If you would like to research how many calories it takes to digest an apple let us know. The bottom line, it takes more calories to digest certain food that others, Thank you for your comment.
Fantastic article, thanks for posting!
I'm going to have to go with the Boss here, however. Scientists say the only true negative calorie "food" is possibly cardboard. I think it would need some ketchup or something to get it down, however. <grin> The body efficiently digests almost anything edible, and like the Boss says, about 10-25% of the calories of a food item are needed to digest most things.
Anyways, I didn't see cucumbers and unsweetened pickles (still cucumbers, but many people might not realize it) on your list. They are mostly water, have fiber, a little protein, and a little bit of sugar.
I guarantee that if you ate your fill of cucumbers, or some of these other "negative calorie" foods listed here, you would lose weight, but probably only because they contain so few calories, you wouldn't be able to eat the volume of these items it would take to meet your daily caloric needs to just maintain your weight! And the fiber they contain would probably clean out your digestive system, making you lose even more weight (artificially).
Wow great Hub...again. I was familiar with calories and the idea that it takes calories to digest our foods but I was not aware of the 'negative calorie'. Great Hub.
Daniel.

I knew about celery but I did not know about all the other fruits and vegetables that were considered negative calorie foods. Thanks for the informative HUB.
