To do the job, you will some essential tools for home improvement including - Tree saw, Drill/driver and 1/2-inch bit, Rubber mallet, Screwdriver, Christmas tree stand, Disposable latex hand gloves, cooking oil, paper towel, WD-40.

Once you are ready with all the above essential tools, you can start the job.

How to Make your Christmas Tree Last

1. Cutting the Christmas Tree: Most Christmas Trees bought in lots are cut several weeks ahead of Christmas. These are not fresh Christmas Trees. The first step to make your Christmas Tree last is to get a Fresh one. The only way to get a truly fresh tree is to cut it at a Christmas tree farm. To protect your hands from sap and pitch, wear disposable latex hand gloves. In case you do get the pitch on your hands, apply cooking oil and remove it with paper towel.

2. Carrying the Christmas Tree: Once you are done with cutting the Christmas Tree, immediately place a baggie around the cut end and fasten it on with a rubber band. Now you can carry the tree home. Don’t waste time.

3. At Home: As soon as you reach home, lay the tree on its side and make a straight cut at the bottom of the trunk. Use a tree saw with WD-40 to the saw blade. This will help the saw blade move smoothly so that you get a smooth and even cut.

4. Making holes in the trunk: Now make a hole straight into the bottom of the trunk. Use a 1/2-inch drill bit for the job. Also make 3 or 4 holes around the edge of the trunk where it will be submerged in water. These holes with help the tree to absorb water that will help it to remain fresh for long.

5. Making the tree stand: Push the stand’s container onto the trunk. Make sure the bottom drill hole sits on the stand’s inner spike. Now secure the stand in place with a few quick blows of a rubber mallet.

6. Tightening the tree: Tighten the eye bolts to make the trunk stand evenly at the centre. Tighten the eye bolts securely with a screwdriver.

7. Lifting the tree: Lift the tree into standing position. Place the stand in place, and lift and secure the tree and container into the base.

8. Fill the container with water: Once you have lifted the tree in place, immediately fill the container with water and add in a package of tree nutrients. These tree nutrients will add life to the tree.

9. Watering the tree: Check and water the tree regularly on daily basis. Keep the container at least half full with water all the time.

10. Placing the Christmas Tree: If you want to keep your Christmas tree fresh and last longer, place it away from heat registers, vents, and fireplaces.

This is pretty much how we have taken care of our real trees except for that we use sugar water instead of the tree nutrients. I'm curious what the tree nutrients are - maybe we could get even longer life using those.
