French Toast Sandwich with Elephants
78Novelty and Gourmet Foods
After an acquaintance dyed cake batter black unbeknownst to us, frosted it with red icing, cut and served it to us, broke into gales of screaming laughter and rolled on the floor, I thought "Hmmm."
This occured after he had made a pot of stew with popcorn and pickles in it. I think he really wanted to be a pop artist, but would not admit it, because it was not "manly." Only fighting in the Gul War was manly. This must have been going away party and he wanted to do something so odd and annoying that we would not forget him if he did not return. Those of us in attendance began to head for the door.
However, this Persian Gulf inclined oddball brought out a good frying pan and prepared a recipe similar to the one listed below (I have added ingredients over the years.)
It was quite good.
(Oh, did he come back? Yes, and disappeared into the land of OOOOOOO-klahoma, where elephants stand in the corn fields to measure whether the corn is yet eye-high. Or is that Munchkin Land?)

Gourmet Ham & Cheese on French Toast
INGREDIENTS
- Cast Iron Skillet
- Large but shallow Bowl or Pan - a cake pan would do.
- Sourdough Bread
- 1 Large Egg per sandwich
- Salt and Pepper to taste
- 1 or 2 slices of Deli Boiled Ham or sliced Baked Ham from another meal
- 2 slices of Swiss, Muenster, or Sharp Cheddar Cheese per sandwich. Some diners enjoy Pepper Jack instead, or add a Tablespoon of a good Pimento Cheese Spread in the center.
- Cream or Whole Milk
- A dash of Nutmeg and Cinnamon
- Vegetable Oil or Butter
OPTIONAL FILLING ADDITIONS
- Thinly sliced and lightly sauteed Bermuda or Vidalia Onion
- Thinly sliced and lightly sauteed Green Bell Pepper Rings
- 2 cooked but not crunchy rashers of Bacon per sandwich
- Other, of your choice
INSTRUCTIONS
- Mix about 2-inches high an amount of milk and the eggs together very well in the pan you have selected. Add salt and pepper to your taste preference as well as nutmeg and cinnamon and mix well.
- Build sandwiches upward with a slice of bread on the bottom, 1 slice cheese, meat, a small mount of any other filling you prefer, another cheese slice, and top bread slice.
- Heat the frying pan over a medium level of heat.
- Add oil or butter to coast the bottom of the hot pan.
- Dip a sandwich into the egg mixture, turning over twice to ensure complete coverage.
- Cook the sandwich on the first side until golden brown, checking with a spatula, and turn the sandwich and repeat. Each side may take 4-5 minutes, and turn down the heat of the sandwich is cooking too quickly, to avoid burning.
- Use additional oil or butter for each sandwich as needed.
You can also make a smaller sandwich by using only one bread slice, cut diagonally, to make a half sandwich.

Hi jim10 - I aw one with peanut butter and jelly in it, and some people may enjoy that as well. Must be a range of savory or seeet sandwiches like this out there.
Oh wow! An awesome recipe AND Powdered Toast Man! Is it my birthday? It sure feels like it!
Now you've got me hungry for a Sunday Brunch at the Elephant Walk! I'm not far from 3 of them but haven't been to, YET!
I thought elephant was included in the meal lol. But reading further I realized it was just a place. But true I have not seen real elephant maybe I have to check out zoo.
I never would have thought of French Toast Like that. Thank goodness no elephants were in the recipe :)
Oh how yummy I have to try it out and elephants are my favorite animals!!
Happy unbirthday BT, don't be abducted by ET, have a nice sandwich all French Toasty....... and watch elephants on TV.
Dottie1 - You have an Elephant Walk near you? You must tell us about the good food there when you go!
ladyvenus - I hope the Hub was fun for you to read!
RGraf - the toast is better every time I think of something new to stuff it with.
Triplet Mom - I hope you love the recipe. I will have to make one (without meat) and share it with an elephant soon.
Now you are sending me to bed hungry! I liked how elaborate you made your hub, and thanks for the Ren & Stimpy clip :D
I remember that Ren and Stimpy! Nice touch. Well I for one am famished and can think of nothing better to have than a French Toast Sandwich with Elephants! I think I'm gonna die till I get some. So sad about the elephants. It's beautiful that you added the reief and awareness links.
Been ages since I had french toast. Trouble is I can only eat eggs in winter. Some weird allergic reaction pops up if I have them in summer.
Paper Moon - Thanks! I like to connect a few parallels for interest. Hope it's fun for you.
WhiskeyChick - have you seen the documentaries on the elephant rescue habitats - especially the pone where an old female elephnat had been recused fomr a run down abusive circus and rested until her younger cohort from the same circus arrived at the rescue farm? She tried to break down the tall chain link fence to be with her - it had been many years, but they were bonded.
cashmere - I wonder what the seansons do to us. Another friend has a skin allergy that produces blisters only in spring and summer. Can't figure it out. Eggs bother me if I eat them in thge same meal as chicken - hard boiled eggs and fried chicken on a picnic - I get itching sometomes, but always an upset stomach. too much chix!
" She tried to break down the tall chain link fence to be with her - it had been many years, but they were bonded"
That is so sweet. :) Anyone who says animals don't have emotions is totally clueless.
Indeed so, Paper Moon.
It's wonderful that you have The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee listed, they are the best..
Motala and FAE (Friends of the Asian Elephant) in Thailand is also excellent..
Riddle Elephant Sanctuary in Arkansas..not so much...
Oh, jodysjungle - I read your website all the time and I hope you post some articles on Hubpages. It makes me happy that you have read this and there will be more about elephants from me very soon. Thank you for your comments!

Thanks for the recipe. I believe a Monte Cristo which is a very similar sandwich. they are great. I love dipping them in syrup.
French toast is great with so many variations with fruit, nuts, and even other strange things, I guess.
