Ingredients for Basic French Toast

Ingredients:

  • One loaf of bread, preferably stale. The staleness makes the bread soak up more of the mixture, giving it more taste!
  • 1 Tablespoon of butter
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Maple syrup (for best results, use high quality syrup...the kind that's made in Vermont is a great place to start looking!)

Cinnamon makes French Toast really shine. Stick with just a teaspoon to dust one side, a little goes a long way. Try nutmeg or allspice if you want to give it some extra spice.

Directions for Quick French Toast

Directions:

  1. Combine the eggs, vanilla, and milk in a bowl. Beat together with a whisk until combined.
  2. Heat up your griddle or cooking area enough to melt some butter, but not so hot that you'll burn the butter in a minute. On most stoves, this will be between low and medium.
  3. Take each piece of bread and dip both sides into the egg mixture quickly to coat both sides. Don't let them soak or they'll turn into mush when you cook them!
  4. Throw the pieces onto the griddle as you dip them. Sprinkle the cinnamon on top, and cook each piece until the bottoms are browned.
  5. Flip the french toast and brown the other side. This side will cook faster.
  6. Remove from heat, and top with powdered sugar, maple syrup and butter. Enjoy!

I make almost the same toast, but have started cutting slices of banana, then pressing in it while first side is cooking and then flip as usual, and serve banana side up.
