- 1 Cup Flour
- 1/2 Cup Salt
- 1/2 Cup Water
- Acrylic Paints
- Clear Acrylic Sealer
- Glitter
- Several different paint brushes for detailing
- Ribbon or wire for hanging your ornaments
- Cookie Cutters
- Wax paper
Step 1
Making ornaments is a fun and easy craft that you can do with the whole family. With this craft you and your children can use your imaginations and create memories that will last a life time.
Add the following items to your mixing bowl: 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup salt and 1/2 cup water. If you want to make colorful dough, add food coloring to the water before you add it to the mixing bowl. Once your items are added to the mixing bowl, knead the dough until it is elastic and smooth. You don't want your dough to be sticky so if it has too much water or is too sticky you can add a sprinkle of flour to the dough and continue kneading.
Step 2
Once all the stickiness is gone your dough is ready to be spread onto a flat surface. Use a rolling pin to roll your dough out on a lightly floured surface(as if you were making cookies). If the dough gets stuck to your rolling pin, add a little flour to it. You want the dough to be about 1/4 inch thick. Once your dough is rolled out, cut shapes using your cookie cutters or you can freestyle shapes onto the dough. Make sure to use the end of your paint brush or a straw to make a hole at the top of the shape before you place it in the oven. The hole will allow you to loop a ribbon for hanging when your ornament is all done.
Step 3
Now you can place your ornaments onto a non greased cookie sheet and place them in the oven at 250F for about 1 1/2 hours. If your oven runs hot it's always best to check your ornaments in 1/2 hour increments. Your ornaments will be done once they are no longer soft or wet. You don't want to leave your ornaments in the oven too long. If they do have a little brown to them don't worry you can cover that up with your paint, but if it is a lot of brown then you want to start over.
Step 4
After you remove your ornaments from the oven place them on wax paper so they don't stick. You want your ornaments to completely cool before adding paint or decorations to them. Once your ornaments have cooled, you can begin adding paint and other decorations. Let the paint dry completely before you add glitter and other decorations. Make sure to only use small amounts of glue when putting your glitter and decoration on or you will end up with a mess.
Step 5
After you have added your paint and decorations and everything is dry, you can seal your work by spraying it with a clear acrylic sealer. The sealer will help preserve your paint for years to come. After everything is dry you can add your ribbon or wire for hanging. Now all you have to do is hang your ornament on the tree or give as gifts.
