How to Make Your Writing Better - Little Known Mistakes
51
Common mistakes you probably make, but don't know about!
If you are a blogger, then chances are you have made one or more of these mistakes. This hub is intended as an answer to the request "What are the least known mistakes made by writers", but I'm sure you can find something in your writing to improve. So let's get to it.
The Apostrophe
This has got to be my biggest pet peeve. People just don't seem to understand what apostrophes are for. Okay, an apostrophe is to use in a contraction such as "don't(do not)". It is generally used to replace the letters and the space. The only other thing you use an apostrophe for is to show ownership, such as:
Sarah's coat got stuck in Fred's door when he slammed the door behind her.
It is not used as plural, e.g. more than one. This is SO wrong:
Jim sold 3 car's today after speaking with many customer's.
If you are reading this, and I see you doing this in your blog, I will tear my hair out! ;)
Using the Wrong Words
There are several words that sound the same (homonyms), that people seem to get mixed up all the time:
there - not here, but there their- possessive form of they
your- possessive form of you you're- YOU ARE (there's that apostrophe!)
effect - something that is caused affect - to influence something (You can, however, affect an effect! :) )
should of, would of - completely wrong. What you are trying to say is should've, would've. Thanks for using apostrophes on this one. Or better yet "should have, would have"!
its - shows possession it's - contraction for "it is"
One more thing; i.e. Means "that is", e.g means "for example". It was very light outside, i.e. luminous. Johnny's life was filled with failure, e.g. losing his job. This is something that is commonly misused. See if you can catch it the next time you use it!
Using They instead of He or She
I know I have been guilty of this one:
I was chatting with a friend at school, and they said "blah!".
Try to avoid this mistake. The above example is especially annoying because you probably know the sex of your friend. What if you don't know their sex?
Oops. I did it in my last sentence in the paragraph above! It is more correct to use "his or her", "he or she", or "(s)he". I have seen authors that keep a generic "he" or "him", which is just fine, or other who switch between "he" and "she". Its up to you. Just stop using their or them when you aren't trying to show plural form!

Stop Being Redundantly Redundant
This may seem like an obvious one, but I have seen it time and time again. Like "time and time again" from the previous sentence. Just make sure you are looking over what you write and not writing things like:
The sunshine shined in her eyes and blinded her.
It was a sudden and unexpected surprise. (sudden and unexpected is the definition of surprise)
Me and I
People are forever mixing up "me" and "i" when used in conjuction with someone else:
Mary and me played chess for 2 hours. <----WRONG
This is very easy to check for. Just take out the other person! "Me played chess for 2 hours". Nope, I don't think that works. "I played chess for 2 hours". Ah, there it is. Thus, "Mary and I played chess for 2 hours". Oh, and by the way "me" and "I" come after anyone else you mention.

What writing error really IRKS you?
You caught many of my mistakes--I use critique groups to help spot them in my writing. Great article.
This is a very good article on correcting writing mistakes. I appreciate you taking the time to write it. One thing you may want to add. People sometimes use then instead of than.
Good point. :)
I'm not perfect and I must admit, there are times that we have writing flaws that we don't even notice. Thanks. :)

I don't like it when someone uses "loose" instead of "lose", it's a mistake I try very hard not to make myself even though none of us are perfect :)
