Long Island Iced Tea Mixed Drink History

There is a lot of controversy as to when, how, where, and why the Long Island Iced Tea mixed drink originated. Some claim it originated during the Prohibition Era as a way to disguise the alcoholic drink. Others say it was invented by a bartender in a bar on Long Island in New York. There are other claims by a neighborhood in Tennessee.

Wherever or whenever the Long Island Iced Tea drink was developed, it is one of the most popular alcoholic drinks ever invented. Long Island Iced Teas pack a powerful alcoholic punch, as it is made with at least four different types of liquor.

There are as many variations and arguments about the original, 'classic' recipe for a Long Island Iced Tea as there are controversies over its origins. Below is what is considered the classic Long Island Iced Tea recipe for the majority of people. I have also included optional minor variations to avoid displeasing Long Island Iced Tea fans who may have a favorite Long Island Iced Tea recipe.

Classic Long Island Iced Tea Drink Recipe

First, choose a 16 oz. size glass (a highball glass is the classic choice). Fill it almost to the top with ice cubes.

To the glass, add equal parts of (1/2 oz. each):

Vodka

Gin

Rum

Tequila

Triple Sec

Add about 1 1/2 ounces of sour mix to the glass.

Add a splash of Coca-Cola and a squeeze from a fresh lemon or lime peel.

Add a straw and stir.

Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Most people prefer a Long Island Iced Tea mixed with all clear liquors. Some also are of the opinion that Top Shelf liquors result in a better Long Island Iced Tea drink with less of a hangover the next day.

Variations- Some use one of these substitutes for the sour mix: sweet and sour mix, fresh lemon juice or fresh lime juice. Some people prefer a lime wedge to a lemon wedge for the garnish. Some also insist on a maraschino cherry added as a garnish.

Gotta say these are one of my favorites. Even a notch better than the popular mojito.

Makes me want to skip out of work right now for one of these. I haven't had one in so long. Maybe it is time for a long lunch break?

Angela, Another great hub. I always wondered how much booze was in one. Now I see they aren't so lethal after all! I've enjoyed them over the years.
