How to Pack a Kitchen for a Move
67Packing Your Kitchen
If you have to move, one of the most overwhelming rooms to pack is the kitchen. It´s the last room you want to pack, because you want to be able to use it till the last minute. When you decide it´s time to start it´s a good idea to have a game plan.
- Go through all your cupboards, pantries, drawers and through away all the trash. You know the half eaten candy from last Christmas, the empty cereal box, the broken cups and saucers.
- Put aside a box for the essential items you´ll need in your new house for the first couple of days: coffee, coffee machine, toaster, plates, mugs and cutlery for each member of your family, napkins, paper towels, dish soap, salt, pepper, dish towel, sugar
- You should have planned your grocery shopping accordingly and any food you have leftover you can give away. Don´t pack perishables. Give away opened cleaning supplies, so nothing spills during the move.
- Start by packing your less used items (you can do this with plenty of time) like fine china, wine glasses, baking utensils, small appliances, extra tablecloths and dishtowels, etc.
- Carefully pack your wine and liquor bottles but don´t pack any opened ones.
- Pack the pantry, but don´t pack any opened items.
- Pack your drawers but remember not to pack anything that hasn´t been used for 6 months. If you haven´t used it in this house, you won´t use it in the next. Have a garage sale or donate these items.
- Ask your moving company for instructions on how to prepare your large appliances for the move.
- As you pack, label each box: Kitchen Box #, and a small description of what is inside. In your "moving notebook" you can specify the items in Kitchen Box # 1.
As long as you´re organized and keep to your outlined planned, the packing of your kitchen should go smoothly. Don´t forget to pack something special for the family in your "essential kitchen box", a special candle, a picture, your refrigerator magnets, something to start feeling a t home again.
