How to Pay Down Debt Fast: Tips

In order to pay down debt, you're going to need to change your habits. Often, what leads people to large amounts of debt is poor spending habits in which they constantly put money towards things they simply cannot afford. The truth is that you are going to need to stop spending money on things like clothes, movies, DVDs, CDs, expensive restaurants, et cetera. Only spend money on absolute necessities, and do what you can to cut back on those as well. Once you're out of debt, it's fine to start spending money on yourself, but still make sure you're never paying for anything you cannot afford right then and there. Don't put anything on your credit card that you're not going to be able to pay in full once the bill comes.

Try to stop using credit cards completely. Cut them up if you have to. While it may be tough to be strict with yourself about your spending habits, your debt is never going to go away, or may even accumulate further if you're not changing your habits. If you find that you absolutely cannot stop spending, seek help, as there are psychological conditions in which people are compulsive shoppers and spend thousands of dollars on things they neither need nor use. This is a bigger problem that needs to be addressed first.

One of the ways that will help you to pay down debt fast is to contact your creditors and explain that you are wanting to pay your debts, but you're having trouble doing so, and ask them if there is anything they can do. Most creditors will make some kind of attempt in order to help you pay off your debts, be it to lower your interest rate, lower the monthly payments, or even cut down a portion of your debt altogether. However, if your creditor is unwilling to help, don't argue with them or be rude. Simply thank them for their time and hang up.

Pay down credit cards and loans that have the highest interest rate first. People who pay down debt with the highest interest rates first have a much better time clearing out their debt. After you pay off the amount with the highest interest rate attached, move on to the next one.
