How to Plant and Grow Herb Garden Seeds
65Planting and growing an herb garden from seeds is not that hard and difficult once you get the feel of it. Although different seeds for different herbs have individual preparation and sowing procedures and requirements, herbs are versatile plants and can adapt to any location. Patience, dedication and hard work are only some of the traits needed to be able to grow your herbs from seeds. Knowing how to plant and grow herb garden seeds properly will also help you a lot in successfully creating your herb garden.
- Select your herbs and seeds. Understand that you must have a plan or design for your herb garden. If you choose to have an Italian herb garden then you will have to have seeds for basil, oregano, garlic chives and parsley. There are herbs that are best to plant as seeds while there are those that would be best planted from seedlings. You will have to research thoroughly on the herbs you want to plant and grow.
- Prepare your seeds. You need to soak your chosen seeds overnight. Set aside as much seeds as you want and will need for your planting.
- Moisten your soil. Moisten your garden soil and place it in a germination tray. Spread the soil evenly and make sure that it isn’t too loose or too tightly packed.
- Plant your seeds. When planting your seeds in the germination tray, be sure to place them at 1/4 inch deep for medium to large seeds. Very small seeds should just be sprinkled on top of the soil.
- Protect your seeds and provide ample light. Your seeds will need sunlight and must be well protected. Initially, cover the germination tray with a plastic cover and place it in an area where there is enough light but not directly under the sun.
- Water your seeds. Do not let your soil go dry. Spray water your soil whenever it gets dry but be careful not to overwater it.
- Germinate your seeds. Once your seeds have started to germinate, remove the plastic cover from the germinating tray and place it under direct sunlight. If you have no area where your seedlings will be able to get enough sunlight put them under fluorescent bulbs.
- Prepare your garden soil. Whether you choose to grow your herbs in a garden plot or in a container garden, you need to prepare soil. You can buy ready made soil from the nearest garden center or you can mix equal parts of coir compost, vermiculite and perlite for your soil. It would be easier to grow your herb seeds from ready made soil. If you are using a container, line up the bottom of your container with gravel to allow for a good drainage system.
- Transplant your seedlings. When your seedlings have grown with at least two sets of leaves then they are ready to be transplanted to your prepared garden plot or container garden. Be sure that you are using a nutrient rich soil so that your seedlings will grow into healthy plants. Water your transplanted seedlings everyday for a week and twice a week thereafter.
- Nurture your herbs. Sprinkling your herbs with fertilizer occasionally will give you healthier herbs. Your herbs should also be receiving enough sunlight for 4 to 6 hours a day. Do not let your soil go dry.
