Planning is the Key to Preparing for Moving Day

How to Prepare for Moving Day

Some people like being gypsies and moving all over the place while others abhor the changing of their living locations. This articles is for the latter to make moving a little easier on them. You must plan is you are to make moving easy and non stressful.

Step One: To avoid chaos, plan your moving trip at least six weeks in advance of your actual move. One month and two weeks prior to the moving date, get referrals of moving companies from friends, family or co workers who have used the moving company services. Do a bit of research yourself and get about three estimates from the referred moving companies. Figure out the best costs from the estimates based on weight and distance. Also discern whether the moving company charges a flat rate or by the hour. Inquire about the insurance coverage provided and check with your own insurance company. Estimates should be in writing and the signed contract should be rendered before the actual move.

Step Two: Three to Five weeks before the move, purchase moving supplies such as boxes which can be purchased from moving companies. You will also need for your move, box cutters, masking tape with dispensers, labels and wrapping material. Pack your items that are used infrequently such as special and holiday items. Smaller boxes can be used for heavy items and larger boxes can be used for lightweight items such as pillows.

Step Three: One to two weeks before or on moving day, go room to room and pack the bulky items or use a system that you find works great for you and optimally. Go online at www.usps.com and complete a change of address form. Notify major credit card and bank companies of your move. Give the moving company the old and the new address with directions and your cell phone number. Request that internet and phone services be disconnected the day after the move and that the services be installed in the new home a day before you arrive.

I just went through this and didn't quite follow the plan you outlined, but pretty close. I found by planning a section of the move at a time it was a lot less overwhelming and I could sleep at night not worrying about getting behind. Your right on about planning. Good Hub.

rb11, thank you for your comment. I think that the key word here is planning and also to plan your move in stages or phases. Good Job. It sounds like your move went alright.
