The breast is an important part of the woman's body; it is very sensitive to hormones, especially to estrogen and progesterone. Most causes of breast cancer are associated with excessive estrogen level.

What is Fibrocystic Breast? Fibrocystic breast condition is a common non-cancerous condition, about 60% of women in their premenstrual age experiences fibrocystic breast changes. Fibrocystic breast symptoms include lumps, cysts, tenderness and pain. Fibrocystic breast itself is not a risk factor for breast cancer, but fibrocystic breast condition can sometimes make it more difficult to detect a hidden breast cancer with standard examination. Some women have many lumps, some women have only one. Fibrocystic breast generally worsen premenstrually. When menopause begins, fibrocystic breast ends for some women.

How Estrogen cause Fibrocystic breast or breast lumps: The breast is composed of fatty tissue interwoven with ducts and glands. The breast is influenced by hormones particularly estrogen, which stimulates tissue growth.If they are over stimulated, they can become swollen and blocked, leading to the formation of lumps.

Ways to prevent fibrocystic breast:

  • If you have fibrocystic breasts and you're premenopausal, you can use the recommended dose of progesterone cream, usually ¼ to ½ tsp daily, from day 12 of your cycle (day 1 is the first day of menstruation) to two days before your period is due, usually twenty six to twenty eight days for most women. Do not use progesterone cream if you are trying to become pregnant, because starting the cream before you ovulate can block ovulation, and stopping it at day 26 or 28 brings on menstruation because an abrupt drop in hormones triggers menstruation.
  • Women under 35 years old are advised to try dietary and lifestyle changes and some herbal remedies before resorting to progesterone. (Women over 35 years old should try these remedies first, too.)
  • Exercise is one of the best things you can do to relieve tender or fibrocystic breasts. Moving your body moves your lymphatic system, which is composed of millions of tiny channels, glands, and ducts that draws out toxins out of the body. Stretching as in yoga is one of the best types of exercise you can do for your lymphatic system.
