How to Prevent Constipation while on Vacation
67
More than half of travelers' experiences constipation, this is because the intestine is extremely sensitive to travel-related changes (like diet, schedule and stress level) which disrupt healthy function and trigger constipation. Fortunately, you don't have to struggle with straining, bloat, cramping, because there are simple ways that prevent constipation your travels take you.
Causes of Constipation:
- The powerful air-conditioning in airplane cabins and cars can cause dehydration; even mild dehydration can make intestinal content drier and more difficult to pass.
- A hectic itinerary and limited restroom access can prevent travelers from using the bathroom when the urge strikes and holding it suppresses the gastrocolic reflex, the BM-triggering muscle contractions that tend to occur at the same time every day. This makes the impulse less likely to return on schedule the following day. But it is important to know that "the gastrocolic reflex is most likely to occur soon after the person wakes up in the morning." So allow yourself a 30-minute relaxation time before you have to leave your hotel room for the day.
- Deficiency of magnesium. The stress of travelling can take away internal stores of magnesium, a muscle-relaxing mineral that's used up when the body is subjected to stress. "Stress-induced magnesium shortages can prevent intestinal-muscle movement, slowing the rate at which contents travel through and out of the system.
Prevention / Remedy:
- Avoid alcoholic beverages a couple of days before your trip. Alcohol can cause dehydration which makes intestinal content difficult to pass.
- Avoid skipping meals. Keeping to your regular eating schedule will help maintain regularity.
- Drink plenty of water to prevent constipation due to fluid loss. Frequent sipping means frequent bathrooms break which is good since standing and walking for a few minutes regularly provides an "internal massage" that keeps colon contents moving.
- Get enough sleep (seven to eight hours per night) because inadequate sleepwill affect the body and your bowel movements.
- Take natural laxative like Psyllium, make sure to drink one to two cups of water simultaneously to keep things moving! Other good remedy is dulcolax. Drink this before you sleep so you can go to the bathroom first thing in the morning.
- Eat magnesium rich snacks like prunes, dried apricots and nuts whenever you feel constipated.
- Pineapples, apples and apple juice are an excellent remedy for constipation.
