Different Ways to Stop Smoking

You might be wondering how to stop smoking, what way works best, and what products have worked for other smokers. Three possible alternatives include:

  • nicotine replacement therapies such as patches, gum, inhalers, and nasal spray
  • medications such as Zyban and Chantix
  • certain herbssuch as Skullcap, Valerian, Parrot's Beak, Golden Seal, and Oregon Grape Root

Ask your doctor or alternative health care professional about these and other stop smoking aids.

Be sure to combine any stop smoking aid with regular exercise (take it easy at first if you are not currently on an exercise program), a healthy diet, plenty of water, and the support of your family and friends.

  • Ten Tips to Stay Young and Age Slowly

Anyone over 50 can probably remember what "old" people were 30 or 40 years ago. Usually they were people over 50! Five Steps to Overcome the Smoking Habit

Since lots of people deal with stress by reaching for a cigarette, they can stop smoking by changing that habit. Here are five steps to changing the smoking habit:

1. Begin slowly.

2. Each day increase the amount of time you delay smoking - for example, if you have the habit of smoking after a meal, wait a few minutes longer each day before you smoke after eating.

3. As you feel more in control of yourself by delaying the cigarettes, your self confidence will improve and you will be able to direct events instead of events directing you.

4. Select a day to stop smoking, perhaps the day that you will run out of cigarettes. Be sure you don't allow yourself to buy any more.

5. Stick to your plan. During the first 2 weeks the cravings will be the hardest as the nicotine is flushed from your system.

Since many people smoke to relax, work on reducing the stress in your life or work on how to deal with the stress. It is possible to relax without a cigarette, and part of your job is to find those other things that will help you relax.
