Why remap a key on a Comcast remote

Remapping keys on a remote control gives you the ability to use it more comfortably. A Comcast remote control can be remapped in certain ways to make keys easier to use, closer to one another or even to add more features to the remote. While most consumers would not think about hacking their remotes, it does add a level of functionality that makes the overall experience of using a DVR cable box easier.

The process of remapping a key on a remote control is pretty simple.  First, press one of the device keys and then hold the Setup button down until it blinks twice.  Once it blinks, type in 994 and the device key will once again blink twice.  You then click the device key one more time and then you have one of two options: You can create a remapped key or you can create a shifted key that will host another remapped key.  A shifted key on a Comcast remote control lets you house two different sets of keystrokes on it.

Why remap a key?

  • Change the layout of the remote
  • Make it easier to find certain buttons
  • Group buttons into one place for easier access

How to add remap a key on a Comcast remote

You want to press the set-up button and type in the three to five digital code for the functionality you seek.  The Comcast remote control uses a five digit code, if you have a three digit code simply put two zeroes in front of it before entering it.  Once entered, you then can hit the device key you want to set it at.  If it is successfully remapped, the button will blink twice and you are good to go.

How to reset a Comcast remote

If you need to reset your Comcast remote control or simply want to delete the remapped key combination, you can do this with an OPS reset.  The OPS reset sets the remote back to how it came out of the box.  Simply hold the set-up keep until it blinks twice, then type in 980 and the key will blink another four times.  Then, your remote is reset and ready to use as if new out of the box.
