How I save $100 a week on groceries!

One of the things I have been working on over the last few months is saving money on groceries. I had heard of Aldis before, but never shopped there. When I made the decision to pay off my mortgage early I knew I had to drastically cut the grocery bill.

We had been in a bad habit of shopping at the corner shop which was a lot more expensive than the supermarket. I was unsure of what to expect at Aldi's but I was pleasantly surprised and am saving over $100 a week on groceries!

Shopping at Aldi is different to other supermarkets that I have used. Here are a few hints if you have not shopped there before.

  • You will need a $2 coin for your trolley which you get before entering the shop.
  • Take your own bags with you to take your groceries home in. They sell bags in the store and thier insulated bags for frozen products are very good quality.
  • The goods will be stacked up on either side of the aisle in cartons, not on shelves. I found that the shop was very clean and not nearly as cluttered up with stock as the supermarket.
  • There is a good range of products available, but sometimes they may be out of some items you are looking for.
  • The prices are a lot lower, and the quality of the products is excellent. Try them out to see what you like.
  • The checkouts at Aldi move very quickly which is a great time saver. Be prepared to move through the checkout quickly.
  • Once the person in front of you has finished, load your groceries onto the conveyer belt.
  • Take your trolley up to the checkout operator as fast as you can and load the items into the trolley. Don't try and pack them into bags as you go, you won't have time.
  • Pay and then take your trolley back to the car and pack into your own bags.
  • Be excited about all the money and time you have saved!!

I can get in an out of Aldi's in 20 minutes now that I am used to it and know what products I want. Shopping there saves us at least $100 a week which is money that we can use to pay our mortage. It is much less stressful than other supermarkets.

Aldi's - is this an American chain, Elouise? Thank you for an informative hub about this grocery choice! Inadvertently, you've also outlined that the store is environmentally friendly, too! Bringing your own bags helps save wear'n'tear on the environment.

*thumbsup* thanks for sharing this information!

Hi Teeray,  Aldi is a German chain but they have stores all over the world, I am in Australia where they are in most large towns.  They are much cheaper as they don't advertise or spend money on fancy store layouts.
