How to Set Television Watching Guidelines for Toddlers
62In an ideal world, maybe, toddlers would refuse to watch television. However, in the real world, television is an inescapable reality and we would have to accept that more often, than not, toddlers do watch television. So, while we do accept television as a part of our modern life, it is also, important that we need to set reasonable television watching guidelines for toddlers and young children.
Here are some easy ways to do just that and ensure that your toddler learns what is alright to watch and when to watch.
Set an Example
First and foremost, is that you as the parent, would have to set an example by watching television sensibly. If you are addicted to the soap operas and sitcoms of the television world, it would be very difficult for your toddler to learn how to watch television sensibly. So, make a conscious decision to watch only what is very important to you and have the television switched off for most part of the day, or watch when your toddler is at daycare or preschool.
Watch Television with Your Toddler
Make the television viewing an interactive experience. By simply letting your toddler watch what is on, you would be encouraging passive recreation. Instead, watch with your toddler, pointing out things of interest and asking questions. Make it an interesting learning experience, rather than just a medley of cartoons, song and dance.
Allow Selective Viewing
Explain to your toddler what can be viewed and why. Toddlers and young children should not be allowed to handle the clicker and view whatever they feel like. By allowing them to view selective, age-appropriate programs, you would be able to monitor the time they spend and also, the content that they are exposed to.
Use the Television Sensibly
It is indeed, very tempting for a tired and stressed out parent to plonk the kids before the television while getting some rest. However, as far as possible, avoid using the television as a baby sitter or even, as a bribe. Otherwise you would be sending out mixed messages to your toddler. Use it only for entertainment-monitored and supervised.
Set Limits on Television Viewing
There should be clear limits on how much television your toddler can watch and also, when there would be no television. For instance, mealtimes, right before naptimes or when, there is a family event happening, television should be off-limits. Also, be firm and gentle when setting limits and chances are your toddler would get used to them in next to no time.
While there is an influx of undesirable programs on television, it is possible to find programs that are educative, interesting and appropriate for toddlers. Used sensibly, the television can be a useful medium of learning about the world. So, use these guidelines to set reasonable limits on television viewing for your toddler.
