How to Setup a Linksys router with Optus ADSL
This will help you get your Linksys router to work with your ADSL modem a Speed Stream 4200. Most of the time if it's an ADSL connection through the modem the router should automatically get the internet from the modem and share it the computers connected to the router. But based on my experience in setting up these devices it's not how it works though. The key here is by adjusting a setting on the Speed Stream 4200 modem. That is right, though you can get online through your modem you still need to change it setting to allow the router to get online through your modem. And that is what I will share to all of you guys. And again this step will be compatible with all of the Linksys routers.
I will give first the steps on how to configure the Speed Stream 4200 Modem to work with your Linksys router.
Step 1. Have your computer connected directly to Speed Stream 4200 Modem, and make sure that you can get online. Then open browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) in the address bar you type the address of the modem http://10.1.1.1/ and click go or hit enter. You will be asked for a username and password. Just type "admin" for the username and leave the password field blank. And this will take to the setup page of your Speed Stream 4200 Modem. On the left hand side of the screen just click on the Setup Menu under this menu you will have a sub menucalled "Mode" just click and you will see the Mode Selection, by default this is set to OptusBridge, we need to set the modem's mode to "NAPT" and click on Apply. After you click the apply button you will be ask if you want to restart the router modem, just say yes or allow it to restart it's self to save the settings that we have changed. And check if you will still be able to get online after it rebooted itself. But I'm sure that you should still be able to. Now we are done configuring the Speed Stream 4200 Modem.
The next step is to install the router. At this time if your router still has the default settings you will be able to automatically go online after you connected the router to the modem and power it on. If not follow the steps below.
Step 1. Connect the router to the modem. The Speed Stream 4200 should go the internet port on the back of the Linksys router and the computer should be wired to the Ethernet port on the router labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Step 2. Open your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) and type in the address bar http://192.168.1.1/ and it will ask you to login, just type "admin" for the password field and leave the username field blank. This is the default password of your router if you changed it login using the password that you have set for your router.
Step 3. After you login to the router setup page here are the settings that you need to check on the Setup screen (this the default screen after you type in the password for your router) look for Internet Connection Type make sure that its set to Automatic Configuration - DHCP and then click Save Setting at the very bottom of the page. Then Click on the Status tab at the upper-right hand side of the page. Check the IP Address and the DNS Nos. Make sure that they are a no. of 10.x.x.x if they have this nos. there that means that it's already taking to the modem. Try to get online now it should work already if not. Do a power cycle. Unplug the power for the router and the modem, leave them off for a minute. Turn on the modem first and wait for the lights to stabilize before turning on the router. Then try the internet again.
I hope this has been informative and helpful to you. If you have any other concerns or if there is problem with the steps that I have posted here just post a comment and I will gladly reply to it.
Thank you and have a nice day!
