If you have problem with taste, smells, or looks of the water then a filter containing activated carbon (AC) may solve your problem. If you want to remove inorganic chemicals such as chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, radon, trihalomethanes etc then a filter with activated carbon is suitable for you. Lead is an exception with AC filters. You should always check if the AC filter that you are buying is suitable for lead removal or not.
Don’t rely on a conventional carbon filter to remove salts, nitrates, nitrites, metals and disease-causing germs and organisms. A carbon filter will accumulate the contaminants removed from water, and bacteria may even breed in it causing health problems. Therefore, you must replace filter cartridges at regular intervals as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
If your water problem is inorganic chemicals, such as salts, metals, lead, minerals, nitrates, asbestos, and other organic chemicals then you should go for a reverse-osmosis (RO) filter. Most models of water filters include carbon pre-filters and post-filters that filter sediment, pesticides, herbicides, THMs, and radon. RO filters can also remove lead and chlorine (to some extent). The Pre- and post-filter cartridges should be replaced annually.
If your water problem is with dissolved solids, such as salts, asbestos fibers, metals, minerals, particles then a distiller may do the job for you. Distillers heat water until it turns to steam and then condenses the steam back into water in a separate water chamber.
Other water purification that you have is Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection devices that may kill bacteria and viruses and improve the taste of water and make it odorless. The negative part is that UV water purifiers are not effective against chemical pollutants. Ultraviolet is sometimes used in combination with carbon filters to kill bacteria.
Hard water problem: This is the most common water problem around the world. Hard water is basically caused by an overabundance of minerals. Hard water normally doesn’t cause any health problem. It causes soap scum, bathtub ring, dish spots, and damage deposits in pipes and hot water heaters. You may need more soap when cleaning with hard water. The only and the most common health problems associated with hard water are skin irritation which is basically caused by soap scum.
Hard water can be conditioned by using an ion exchange water softener. Ion exchange water softeners conditions hard water by substituting sodium chloride for minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron. Remember that this sodium added to water can he hazardous to health.
Of course, you can always buy a bottled water to solve your drinking water problem that is never going to be cheap in the long run. You need a permanent solution to your water problem.
Drink pure and safe water and be healthy.

The town of Telluride relies on Mill Creek — a splashy creek that sprints from the mountains north of town — for its municipal water supply.

The water filtration problem is kind of like the TV Ads for Prescription Meds... "Tell you Doctor if you have liver problems".
Before you choose a filter you need to know what you need to filter. In the United States each municipal water supply is required once per year to make publicly available a water quality report. You can usually find these online. Once you know what is not being filtered or how effective the filtration is in your area you can make better decisions. Keeping in mind there are many contaiminents that are not on the EPA watch list.
