How to Spot a Celebrity Twitter Account
61
If you are looking for people to follow on Twitter, you may be tempted to look up your favorite celebrities. A host of actors, actresses, musicians, bands, comedians and more are signing up and connecting with fans via the service. However, while some of these celebrity accounts are legitimate and are either being run by the celebrity in question or their handlers, there are many more fake celebrity accounts out there. These are a few tips for spotting a legitimate celebrity Twitter account.
First and foremost, if your celebrity of choice has an official web site, MySpace or Facebook page, visit that. Most celebrities will post their Twitter address there to let fans know it is legitimate. Just because their Twitter account says it is official does not mean it is. In fact, many usernames that are actually celebrity names do not belong to the celebrity in question. They were snatched up by others who wish to get some sort of gain from having hold of that name.
Once you check out a celebrity's web site or other official online venue, you will have a better idea of what they do on Twitter. If they do not have a web site or other online presence, proceed with caution. Some celebrity Twitter accounts will say whether or not is official but that does not mean a thing. You can also begin to look at the tweets themselves and see what they say. In some cases, when someone is pretending to be a celebrity, the tweets will be outlandish, outrageous or otherwise scandalous.
When in doubt, take celebrity Twitter accounts with a grain of salt. Many well-known celebrities are on Twitter, and they have been documented as using a particular account. However, beyond that, proceed with caution when looking for the real deal or else you might be getting yourself a faker.
