How to Stop Puppy from Biting
64
Having a new puppy enter your life is an exciting experience. Watching the interaction between your family and the puppy can be memorable. New puppies are cute and they respond with silly actions that make you want to snuggle them and never let go. As your puppy grows and matures, you will be blessed with further excitement, but you will, also, endure the not so exciting moments. Those moments where it will seem as if all you do is clean up after the puppy. The moments where your puppy begins teething and desires to gnaw on all your favorite shoes, table legs, clothing, your hands and your ankles. You will wonder if you chose a puppy possessed by a demon. Fear not. You did not have bad luck when choosing your puppy. Biting is as aggravating to your puppy as it is to you. They are teething, and like a Human baby, they need understanding and help. The following steps will help you console your puppy during teething and stop puppy from biting.
Step One: The Designated Teething Toy
Assign a designated teething toy for your puppy. The toy does not necessarily need to be a dog toy, and most puppies will usually not pay attention to a dog toy (she will likely be choosing one of your favorite shoes or articles of clothing instead). This step may call for a sacrifice. Allow your puppy to teeth on the shoe or article of clothing she has become attached with.
Step Two: Play Smart
During playtime, make sure the designated teething toy or another dog toy is near by. When your puppy starts to bite, tell them to get their toy while placing the toy in their mouth. You will need to repeat the action over and over until the puppy understands what "toy" means. Your puppy will not understand long sentences or counter attacks such as slapping or kicking (You should never have to slap or kick your puppy. That is abusive behavior and teaches your puppy to be violent, which will make for unsuccessful training for the future).
When children are playing with the puppy, you will need to show the children the same technique of putting a teething toy in puppy's mouth. Most children will strike out at the puppy if it begins to bite at them, which is an instinctive reaction, and puppy will see this as play and continue to bite.
Step Three: Continued Reinforcement
Continued reinforcement of placing the teething toy in the puppy's mouth when she bites will allow the growing dog to understand what you want from her. She will learn, after a short amount of time, that when she opens her mouth to bite and you say "Get your toy" she will need to go find her toy.
Step Four: Stop Playing
This step is a hard step, because you or your children will want to play with your puppy, but you must stop when she wants to bite during playtime. If you can not find the designated teething toy or another dog toy, and your puppy does not understand to look for the toy yet, then you will have to stop playing. This is another reinforcement you will have to do to stop puppy from biting.
Step Five: Knowledge
There are many ways to train your puppy and many dog trainers have their own ways and commands when it comes to training a puppy. The best way to incorporate your own training methods is to gain the knowledge of these trainers and use what you like from their training regimen.
