How to Stop Snoring
64How to Stop Snoring
While snoring is not uncommon, it is an obnoxious problem to most of us, especially to your partner. Nobody enjoys being woken up at night by scores of loud snores. The irony of snoring is that a person who snores does not actually know that he or she is a loud snorer until the person who sleeps beside him/her tells him. Things get a little complicated if the person is a close friend, your partner or your spouse. It is difficult to come up with a proper way to convey the message to them. Thus, it is not uncommon for two individuals to sleep in different rooms because one partner could not stand the other partner snoring. I know this is damaging to your relationship and so, in this hub, I will address the problem of snoring and present several steps on how to stop snoring.
Facts about Snoring
Before you learn how to stop snoring, it is really important for you to learn what causes snoring in the first place. Snoring is caused by air blockage in your nasal passage and throat. Thus, your body struggles to take in more air into your lungs, often through your nose and also your mouth, causing you to snore in the process. Research has shown that males generally snore more than females and as you get older, your tendency to snore increases. Blame it on the flabby throat muscles that block the airway. Also, snoring is associated with sleep apnea, a sleep deficiency syndrome where you wake up several times at night to take in more air due to shortness of breath. This might sound scary but people don't usually die from sleep apnea. Your body will react to shortness of breath pretty promptly.
Stop Snoring Solutions
How to stop snoring? There are generally four ways to help you stop snoring. The first is your sleeping posture. You have to make sure that your sleeping posture is correct to allow maximum airway passage. The best way to do so is to sleep with a pillow with your head slightly tilted in order for you to increase airflow. Sleeping flat on the bed is generally not advisable. The next thing that you have to be aware of is food. Certain food has the tendency to increase snoring at night, for instance, alcohol. Make sure you do not consume any alcohol before you sleep. Moreover, you can get items like nasal strips from the pharmacy to help you. Please note that doctors must be consulted before you try the nasal strips or attempt any medication. The last thing to do is snoring exercises. You can do several snoring exercises, like the yawning or chewing gum exercise to help strengthen your jaw and throat muscles, thus preventing them from blocking your airway passage.
