How to Stop Telemarketing Calls and funny ways to handle them
77Are you tired of receiving unwanted marketing calls? Do you want to have a little fun instead? Here are some little fun things you can try.
Telemarketing calls can be from anyone .. it could be a insurance agency looking for new business, it could be a phone company trying to sell you new products or some “phony” business looking to sell you something that you will not need.
Well, if you try some new ways to handle these calls, you might start enjoying these calls instead of getting stressed out. All you need is some wit and humor to enjoy these calls.
Here are some fun things to try
1. Act dumb and ask them to repeat things
Some other fun things would be - Ask them to repeat what they are saying and do that 4 -5 times and they will probably hang up the phone. For some easy words ask them to spell the word. For example if someone is calling for refinance the mortgage.. ask them spell out refinance and mortgage. Act as if you are trying to write it down slowly.
The conversation would be something like this..
Operator : Hi This is John calling from ABC Bank. We would like to offer you refinance on your mortgage.
You : Oh I see.. I don’t get what you are saying. Can you spell whatever you just said for me
Operator : well its r-e-f-i-n-a-n-c-e of mortgage
You : well ok let’s see if I got that right ?? r-e-p-i-n-a-n-t-e
Operator : puzzled and repeats.. (he might eventually correct you. )
You: ok.. finally I got that Refinance .. Now can you explain me what does is mean..
Just act dumb and test the operator’s patience. e.g. ask him to explain what does interest mean. .. you can go on and on. )
2. Ask them to go out for a coffee
Immediately after they finish talking say “Hey.. You really have a very sweet voice. Why don’t we to go out for a coffee? We can handle all this business in the coffee shop.” Most likely the person on other end of the phone will understand that you are not serious about talking.. So they will drop the call.
3. How to handle dinner time calls
We always hate it when the unwanted calls come during dinner time. In such time, you can politely ask them to hold the phone line, keep it on speaker phone and continue with your routine. You can add some fun by saying.. pass me the pizza or salad .. if the operator responds … just tell him ..oh just having some pizza…it’s really yummy... want some ?
4. Ask them their home phone number
Another reply would be “Hey I am kinda busy.. can I have your home phone number to call ?
5. Act as if you can’t listen to operator
Just shout hello couple times and tell them to speak loudly and more loudly.
How to really stop unwanted calls
After you are done having fun.. these are actual legitimate ways you can stop receiving the unwanted calls.
Simply ignoring and making fun will not be enough to stop companies and ad agencies from bothering you.
To stop junk calls go to https://www.donotcall.gov It is the national do not call registry. You can register your home phone or cell phone for free on the website. It will stop telemarketers from calling within few weeks.
Tell the operator to take your phone number off the list. Most of them will honor your decision and stop calling you. For the repeat callers, tell them that you have registered your phone number on the national do not call registry and that you will file a complaint against the company if you receive another telemarketing call in the future.

I totally agree with you Tim-tim. Yes.. the intent is to have some fun.
I have to confess I did part time work some years ago in market research. Here's a few good tips, and they work.
1. Get your phone number added to a list of numbers that are barred from ever being called for selling or market research purposes. In the UK, Ipsos Mori are technically allowed to still contact you provided they are just asking opinions of you and not selling you anything. Anyone else who contacts you can be call-barred. The Telecommuniocations Regulator will enforce it happily. Also children under 16 in the UK cannot be interviewed.
2. Simply tell the caller that your number is an emergency medical number and is connected to a surgery and asdk them to take your number off their database. 99% of firms will comply, they don't want to make waves. I know this is a lie, but it can work...
3. Just ask the company to delete your number form their database. Most will do it, albeit reluctantly.
People who ring you like that are working on a commission, and so the higher their "strike rate", the better they get paid. But in most european countries, there are rules to how far they can go.
PS, sometimes firms will generate your number purely by randomising them in a computer, to target a certain catchment area, but they have no idea who they are calling. I once had to do a ten minute survey with a priest about "sex education". Hoo boy!
4. Some firms offer incentives for surveys and opinions. Doctors get paid anything from £10 to £50 per survey otherwise they hang up.
Some market research can be quite useful. It does have its uses. It can genuinely help to improve services sometimes.

We hardly get telemarketing calls anymore. Sometimes I just give in and do one of the surveys. Most people just screen call with their caller ID or just don't pick up. I think once in awhile, someone might answer it and pull pranks on people. I look at it as that these people are just doing their jobs. As long as you are not mean, it is okay to have a sense of humor. Who knows? They might even enjoy it. Thanks for the nice hub!
