The lymphatic system is the interconnected network of organs and vessels between body tissues and organs by which lymph circulates throughout the body. Lymph is colorless fluid that continuously bathes the cells of the body, and is circulated around the body in order to remove excess fluid and harmful materials from interstitial spaces (body tissues outside the blood vessels). Lymph contains a type of white blood cells called lymphocytes as well as macrophages, they are the infection-fighting components of the lymphatic system.
Function of Lymphatic: Its main function is to maintain fluid balance in the body and fight off infections.
Two Types of Lymphocytes:
- T lymphocytes or T cells - they attack infected cells directly.
- B lymphocytes or B cells - they produce antibodies that attach themselves to antigens.
Parts of the Lymphatic System: Lymphatic vessels, Lymph nodes, Lymphoid organs such as the spleen, tonsils and thymus.
- Lymph vessels are thin walled valves that carries lymph.
- Lymph nodes and lymphoid organs play an important role in immunity. They contain lymphocytes that destroy antigens.
Ways you can protect your lymphatic system:
- Exercise regularly, the best exercise is stretching.
- Avoid catching and spreading infections.
- Practice safe sex.
- Avoid illegal drugs.
- Cleaning wounds and scratches thoroughly.
- Checking for lumps in the armpits, neck and groin.
- Avoid activities that can impede lymph drainage.
- Eat nutritious foods and avoid salty foods.
- Protecting yourself from mosquito bites.
- Maintaining proper hygiene.
Diseases and Disorders that can affect the Lymphatic System: AIDS, edema, lymphangitis, lymphadenitis, lymphoma and elepantiasis.
