How to Tell if You Really Want a Home-Based Business

Starting a home-based business can be a great way to save you both money and time, but there are several things you need to consider first:

1) Would it be more or less stressful on you if your business was ran from home?

For some businesses, it's just not practical because customers would have to show up at your home. For others, especially ones that are primarily Internet-based, it will save you a lot on overhead and commute time.

2) Is your family comfortable with it?

You may have to establish some ground rules about "work" time versus "off" time. That doesn't mean you can't be flexible, but you want to make sure you can still get your work done.

3) If you have to store products, do you have enough room?

This may seem like an easy question at first, but factor in that you probably want to expand at some point as well. A spare bedroom can make a great office/mini-warehouse if you're just starting out.

There are other factors you need to consider as well. For your taxes, I would recommend consulting an accountant so you can find out possible deductions you can still make for overhead, etc. Be careful of the zoning status of your home-if you attempt to run a big operation in a residential area, you could run into a lot of problems. Check with your local government for more information on that issue.

From my own personal experience, running a home-based business has been positive. It is a great way for a person working a job to transition into business without a lot of risk. If you grow too big for your home, you can always rent space when you get to that point. It's better to do it that way than to rent space when you don't need it.

I hope these tips have been helpful, and good luck with your business!
