Story Behind Pokemon
The majority of people from the current generation have all heard probably at least once in their life heard of a very popular animated TV show – Pokemon. Pokemon first began in 1995, and ever since, only became more and more popular. The TV shown was undoubtedly one of the most widely watched across the World, all the way from the United States, to China. Every week day, millions of people would tune in to watch Pokemon, usually at 3PM in most time zones. At 3PM, when you would expect the streets to be full of children playing outside, they were not. Instead, the streets were close to desert, because almost every single child was sitting in front of their TV set at home watching Pokemon. Although many parents did not like their children becoming so addicted to a show, it was hard to take away something so precious away from them.
Pokemon, short for Pocket Monsters, was based on a boy named Ash Ketchum. Ash Ketchum’s goal was to become a Pokemon master, and he could do so by catching all the Pokemon. He would travel around the animated city with a few partners (Pokemon) and his goal was to find and capture Pokemon, through battling them. The graphics of the show were obviously not the greatest since the show was begun in the 1990s, yet it was still very popular. The show had a look and feel to it that kept viewers on the edge of their city for the duration of the thirty minute shows every day of the week. No one could forget the popular phrase “Gotta catch em’ all”. This phrase was played at the end of the introduction before every episode. Ask almost any child this today and they will be able to tell you that the phrase is from the famous Pokemon TV show.
One of the reasons the show seemed to be such a big hit was that it made the viewers feel as if they were a part of the show. For older individuals, this was not anything exciting, but to children, well, that is a whole different story. Children were dumbfounded with excitement from feeling as if they were actually part of the Pokemon show, and Ash Ketchum’s journey to catch all the Pokemon.
The show was so popular that from it sprung many video games, and the video games even continue to be produced in 2009. A lot of other products were created based on Pokemon included backpacks, toys, and much more. Furthermore, the trading cards created millions and millions of dollars for the company. The trading card craze still continues with much younger children, and the cards are widely traded. Some of the cards were known as collector’s cards are very high in value.
Needless to say, the show had great success, and will continue to be known forever. Children in 2009 still watch and love the show, and this will continue to be the case.
