A self diagnosis is highly discouraged, as it is important that you see a specialist so that proper medical tests may be performed.
The first thing that your doctor needs to figure out is whether you have the objective or subjective type of tinnitus. An objective type of tinnitus is one wherein a physician may be able to hear the pulsing sound with the help of a stethoscope or by simply drawing near the patient to listen to the noise. Subjective tinnitus on the other hand, is the most common type of tinnitus but the ear ringing cannot be heard by the examining physician.
Although the subjective type of tinnitus is the most common amongst the two, it is also the one that is less severe. Objective tinnitus is usually caused by problems in the blood pressure, atherosclerosis and other heart related ailments, while subjective tinnitus is often caused by partial or total hearing loss, exposure to loud noise, ear infections, and old age.
The future is bright for tinnitus patients as there are treatment methods which have been found to provide relief to several tinnitus patients already. There is acupuncture and acupressure, hypnosis, white noise tinnitus treatment, herbal medicines (gingko biloba), and homeopathic tinnitus remedies.
