How to Treat a Diabetic Cat

Do you have a diabetic cat?  Diabetes in cats is quite common.  Diabetes is caused by the inability of insulin to balance the glucose levels in cats.  There are two types of diabetes.  Type 1 occurs when the pancreas can’t create enough insulin in a diabetic cat and Type 2 is when the diabetic cat can’t process the insulin.  To treat a diabetic cat, you must spot the symptoms first.

  • Learn the symptoms of a diabetic cat.  If your diabetic cat has been urinating a lot, this is a good sign he has diabetes.  Other signs of a diabetic cat are lethargy, weight loss, and increase appetite.
  • Take your diabetic cat to the veterinarian.  The vet will be able to do a more conclusive examination.  They will test the blood of your diabetic cat.
  • To treat your diabetic cat, you may need to give him insulin injections daily.  The correct dosage must be given each time.  You may also need to change your diabetic cat’s diet. Buying insulin for diabetic cats is inexpensive.
