One of the oddest things many people do in life is put off the things they love to do in favor of things they don't, even though both things likely have the potential to create an income. The idea that work is only supposed to be some form of voluntary torture that we do for paycheck is a myth. Not only will that thought process keep you in a financially struggling position, but it will keep you miserable as well. This impacts your relationships and your health, which are priceless.

When it comes to hobbies, some are easier to transition into a profitable business than others. Loving what you do will make you work more effectively than someone who doesn't like the same things as you, which is why great hobbies can make great businesses if you're willing to but the effort into them.

You may have to do some initial brainstorming and research before you make any kind of leap however. Reading general business and marketing books is helpful. These won't cost you a lot of money if they're from the library or used bookstore. There's also a lot of information readily available on the Internet to give you a feel of the lifestyle and competition level of many hobby-based businesses.

On the financial side, you have a greater chance of success if you transition from hobby to business without using debt. You have less hassles, and your business growth is more solid. It's also a great idea to sit down with the person who does your taxes, especially since you're crossing the hobby/business line when it comes to your income. You can also check online to see if you need any type of specific license for certain types of businesses.

If you have a great idea, the easiest way to transition into it is to build it up part-time while you continue to work a day job. This isn't always the most fun way of doing it in the beginning from a sleep standpoint, but it does get easier over time. It means sacrificing a little TV and free time, but when you're working on something you truly love doing it's actually a fun process. Over time you may be surprised how much more productive you become not only at your business but your day job as well. This is because you're happy and have more energy compared to the person just dragging through life.

Take advantage of the Internet as well, especially if you have a kind of niche hobby that you think a very small percentage of people would be interested in. The great thing is you don't need a lot of people if you work at becoming an expert in that area. You can easily set up an information and education website for very little money and generate an income from advertisers. If you're kind of new to writing online, there are websites like Helium and eHow who will pay you for your work and have templates that make the process easy. The articles themselves not only generate an income for you but show you know what you're doing from a credibility standpoint.
