Michael Oliver Natural Selling Is a Great Example of the Consultative Approach

If you want to experience rejection free selling, then you will want to incorporate the consultative approach into your network marketing training. Michael Oliver is one of the top leaders in this area. Oliver is the author of "How to Sell Network Marketing without fear, anxiety or losing your friends" and he coined the term "natural selling" which is a philosophy that will not only make your business more successful, but more enjoyable.

Most sales people rely on traditional sales techniques. Traditional selling is all about persuading people to do what you want them to do. The focus is on presenting, closing and objection handling. The end result is often resistance and rejection.

Natural selling is completely different. It comes from an inner desire to help people find solutions to their problems. It involves changing your intent from selling your product or service to being a true solutions provider.

To do that, you need to first understand your customer's needs. The biggest mistake sales people make is to present a solution without really understanding their customer's needs and perspective. When you really understand your customer's needs, you not only build trust, but you gain the information you need to present a more tailored solution.

The best way to uncover your customer's needs is through meaningful dialogue, asking questions within what Oliver calls the Natural Selling Conversation Framework. He teaches us what questions to ask and when to ask them.

There are four principles behind Natural Selling:

1. Helping other people solve their problems. Ask "how can I help" vs. "What's in it for me?" It's important to really absorb this intent to serve into your being.

2. Listening to what is being meant, not just what is being said. Remove your ego and the need to talk about you and your solutions, and you will attract people to you. Most people only listen 10% of the time (the rest of the time we're thinking about what we're going to say next or waiting for a gap in the conversation to chime in). Try active listening with the intent to understand the facts and feelings of where someone is coming from.

3. Ask the right questions at the right time. Manipulative questions are used to externally motivate someone into action, but that often leads to buyers' remorse. Instead, ask questions to really understand people's needs and desires. As Oliver says, "People have the answers. All you need are the RIGHT questions!"

4. Feed back what you think you heard they want. Feedback what you think you heard or clarify. The ultimate feedback is at the end of the conversation after you've gone through the discovery process and you are presenting your solution. When you understand what a person is really looking for and why they want it, you can customize your solution and present it in a way that is meaningful to them.

Ann Sieg's Attraction Marketing Leverages the Consultative Approach

Another proponent of the consultative approach is Ann Sieg.

Sieg is one of the pioneers of internet network marketing, and the author of the groundbreaking free report, The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing, Like Oliver, Sieg helps remove the stigma associated with selling. In traditional MLM, the position is that we're not selling, we're just sharing. This downplays the fear of rejection because sharing sounds much less threatening to people than selling, As a result, most network marketers aren't taught how to sell.

On the other end of the spectrum are the network marketers who feel they always have to be selling. Have you ever heard the line, if someone says no to your products or opportunity they don't mean no, they just mean "not yet".

Sieg shows us that the most effective way to sell someone isn't by brute force, but rather through more natural, subtle and cooperative means. Ask lots of questions and show a genuine interest in learning about people. Drill down to uncover their core emotional desires. This gives you valuable information you need to tailor your solution, and it builds a relationship of trust.

In The Renegade Network Marketer, Sieg shows us what a good marketing system looks like, and how marketing is a weakness with most network marketing companies. She also shows us how to use your marketing to attract qualified prospects to you. "A prospect who comes to you is infinitely more qualified than anyone you could ever approach yourself."

Traditional MLM methods involve approaching friends and family, making a contact list of 100 people you know, getting referrals, and the 3-foot rule. The assumption is that everyone is your customer. But are they really interested in what you have to sell? "By tapping into demand instead of trying to create it, you're going with the flow of the river rather than trying to paddle upstream."

Sieg takes it a step further and shows us how the best people to go after are the ones who not only have an interest in your business (or products), but are actively looking for information about it. And she shows us how to attract these people to us!

You do it by becoming a solutions provider. After all, that is what sales is all about - providing solutions to people's problems. Your job is to position yourself in the pathway of where people are when they are looking for solutions. And that place is the Internet.

It is called attraction marketing and it is taking network marketing (and virtually all other small businesses) by storm.

In fact, attraction marketing has become such a sought after method of doing business, that Sieg recently put out a free new report called Attraction Marketer's Manifesto that shows you what attraction marketing is all about and how to do it. It is a must read for anyone seeking to do business online.

Ann Sieg did a wonderful webinar training on the Desperate Marketer vs. the Successful Marketer. The training shows you how to connect with your prospective business partner and be a successful marketer. It is a great training and absolutely free (you don't even need to provide your name or email address).

Hi Cindy,

I completely enjoyed your article, as always! You throughly approach your topic and submit it clearly and from many angles using different forms of delivery which I enjoy.

I particularly liked the quiz, as it brought me back to many years ago when I took a course in active listening to help with a problem my daughter had.

I look forward to your next article!
