How to Write Your 50th Hub on HubPages

I have procrastinated terribly since publishing my 49th hub! I wanted my 50th to be special.  I wanted something brilliant for my 50th hub.

I have come up with nothing brilliant. But I've realized this "milestone" is hindering my productivity. I have a couple of decent ideas, just not killer ideas. Some of my best hubs in terms of traffic have resulted from "decent" ideas. I'm missing out on lots of pennies from Adsense, Amazon, Kontera and Ebay. What is a girl to do? How do you get that milestone hub pecked out on the keyboard?

Write....Something...Anything.

Well, first of all, just write. As I am sure you can tell, that is what I'm doing here. Sort of stream of consciousness. I've about decided that writer's block is really just procrastination. I have to thank Lela Davidson for inspiration in her hub "How to Write a Novel in Six Months, Week 19 Drafting Update: Surviving Interruption"

Lela wrote:

I have to admit, some days don’t go as well as others. If you’re a writer reading this, you understand. If you’re a wannabe writer like I was a few years ago, you may be reading this thinking ‘oh yeah she’s just saying that’. No, I’m not just saying that. None of us ever just say that. The writing is often very, very bad.

Coincidentally, or not, I signed back up for FlyLady this week. One of the first hubs I wrote was about FlyLady's system for keeping a clean house. FlyLady's philosophy is that those of us who procrastinate are really perfectionists. We feel that if we can't do a job "right" we might as well not get started.

FlyLady encourages us to "hit a lick at a snake." I had never heard that expression before, though I live in North Carolina as does FlyLady. I've learned in my housecleaning that it means something like "at least wipe off the top layer of dust, even if you don't have time to knock it all off. There will be a little less to tackle next time."

I like that philosophy better than another I've been taught - that procrastination is about fear. But maybe both apply here. I am procrastinating about this "special" hub because I don't think I have time to do it justice, and if it's not perfect, I fear....what? What the heck am I afraid of? No one will like my hub? Who cares?! Someone will Flag it, and HubPages will Unpublish it? Again, who cares? I have 49 decent hubs - a couple of pretty good ones, if I do say so myself. If this one isn't good enough, well, I'll write another one!

How do you write your 50th hub? You just write it! Don't let it slow you down! Unless you are an SEO expert, you have probably been writing hit or miss hubs anyway.

Write about Writing Your 50th hub.

That's what I've done here so far. But if you'll do as I say and not as I do, you might not have much to write about!

Write about your hubbing experience.

I love reading about other hubbers experience at hubpages, what worked, what didn't, how long it took to get traffic, make money, etc. I've been at hubpages now for 7 months. I'm approaching 10,000 views (probably in the next 24 hours), and I've earned about $15 from adsense, and $5 each from Amazon and Kontera. I just signed up for Ebay this week.

It's been very interesting for me to observe what works and what doesn't at HubPages. My first hub was about my relationship with my 16 year old daughter. I really like that piece, and I received some nice comments, but as of December 3, 2008 it has only been viewed 266 times since April 27, 2008, and 106 of those views are from hubpages.

Next I recycled six articles from my early writing days - one even from high school. Barbecued Snapping Turtle: It Sounds Worse than it Tastes has received 326 views to date and has earned me a little money. I know because my Amazon reports show orders for the wildgame cookbooks advertised on the hub. I personally think this hub is a rather silly little piece, but it turns out to be a fairly unique subject and apparently encourages purchases.

I've continued to both recycle old articles and write new ones. My least successful are my poems - A Poem from my Travels in England: The Gap has only 13 views - half are probably my own! But watching the traffic to Inexpensive Christmas Gift Ideas for Teen Girls has been amazing! Published 10/15/08 as a response to the HubMob, it is already my 2nd most popular hub with just over 1700 views. Only Tips for Recording Your Voice Mail Greeting published 6/20/08 has more views, and only by a few hundred.

Write about What You Do Instead of Writing.

I browsed the Internet. I read other hubbers' hubs. I read the forums. I looked over the Hub Requests. I cleaned my house. I watched television. I did all the typical mind-numbing exercises that we all do when we are avoiding something (except reading at hubpages of course - that's worthwhile!) Something about putting it on paper and admitting what I've been doing instead of publishing that hub puts a little fire under my pants. And heck, it influenced a paragraph that contributes to the hub!

Write Your 51st Hub Instead, and 52nd, and 53rd

I have a few ideas actually on paper, I admit. I wish now I had worked on those hubs and had them on my hard drive, ready to publish after *this,* my incredibly special 50th hub. Maybe one of those would have even turned out to be the perfect choice for number 50. Instead, I've just wasted time and produced nothing.

Technically, I did write my 50th hub without realizing it. I 'unpublished' one hub in my early hubber days and when I wrote An Inexpensive Redneck Christmas Tree: Ornaments from Recycled Materials, I forgot that my total written was different from my total published. Learn from my mistakes. Don't let a milestone turn into a road block. Just write!

Okay, Dineane. Let's get going toward that 100th hub!

Your sister isn't going to like one of your amazon book choices!

I'm not unhappy with my progress in general, just with my stall at the 50th hub. I do have a full time job, remember? :-)

And Deborah never procrastinates, so she won't have to eat anything she doesn't want to, LOL.

A few months ago Dineane, we met and you introduced me to the flylady on my daily organizing hub.    We somewhat drifted apart and today I return on your 50th hub and the flylady is back, LOL.  Congratulations and many more to you. ~Dottie~

Cris, I hope it helps and your 50th isn't a struggle.

Dottie, isn't it funny how things cycle? Nice to "see" you :-)

Hi Dineane, I was in Dottie's hub and she mentioned how you inspired her on what to write for her 50th hub. I am about to write my 50th hub so I also had to visit your hub. LOL I have a feeling that I will end up like what you did and procrastinate just to make sure the 50th one is extra special. Hahaha So after reading your hub, I promise I won't. And thanks for sharing your thoughts on the matter. It helped. (wink) I'm going to write now...

I'm having some of those thoughts as I'm approaching 100. (That's 100 hubs, not years.) For some reason there is a tendency for us to want the 'milestone' numbers to be something extra-special-outstanding. . . even though it is just another number.

You are right it can become a roadblock.

That's where I am right now, at 49, and I am really wanted to make 50 count. The weird thing is that in focusing really hard on making stuff "right," it's possible to make it over-wrought instead.

I'm at 45 and I hadn't even thought about it.  Shoot, thanks Dineane, for getting me all self-concious about it.  Say, I have an idea:  "How Dineane wrote Christoph's 50th Hub for Him."  I'll expect that on my desk by the end of the week.  Thank you.

Wow! Hi everyone - my own little party :-)

Rochelle, I'm starting to think about 100, too (shh, don't let Shades & CR hear me say this, but I'm hoping to make it during the challenge)

Shades, you are right, we sabatoge ourselves in so many ways.

Chris, I'm honored that you would even consider letting me be your ghost writer, but I am not sure I can meet that deadline with so much....ummm...."work" going on for me right now :-)

Christoph has always wanted to make a photo-hub of Bollywood actresses. U could do that one for him.

LOL - can I just copy and paste from other Bollywood hubs? That might not take too long...

More from My Life

  • About Time!

I've neglected not only this blog but ALL of my writing for nearly 6 months! Why? Oh, I could find dozens of excuses, but why bother. It's just time to get started again! The big news lately is our pending move. We've bought a house in Plymouth. I never would have believed, even just a couple of years ago, that I would be moving back home. And even when I started toying with the idea a year or so ago, I never thought it would happen this soon! We are excited, but still sort of stressed, too. Buying a house is nerve-wracking, and we had plenty of bumps along the way that might have made good blog material if the whole process wasn't so competitive. That, and my husband particularly likes his privacy - which limits my public blog material :-) My sister, Julia, is bringing Dad's trailer up tonight and we will move the first load of stuff tomorrow. The final move won't be until the end of January. We have a few things we want to do in the house, like restoring the hardwood floors in the living and dining rooms, before we completely move in. I'll be keeping Julia busy for the next couple of months! For those who don't already know, Julia is the bomb at everything home improvement related. I'm a lucky sister :) There. It's a start. Just like the moving and the Christmas preparation and pretty much any other big job in my life, it all gets done a little at a time. Likely, this post will lead to another - in less than six months!

  • Camille, the World Traveler, is Home!

She made it back safe and sound! Her first words to me (while I was almost hugging the life out of her) were, "What kind of mom gets all her hair cut while her daughter is out of the country?" Ha Ha! I told her I updated my facebook photo just so she would recognize me, but at one Euro for 15 minutes online at the internet cafe, she didn't check in as much as I'd hoped she would. In spite of a bit of bad luck (they lost everyone's luggage on the way there, and someone broke into her hotel room in Paris), Camille had a grand time. I'm sure I'll be hearing more about it. We only talked an hour or so when she got home, and she's at her dad's for the rest of the weekend. I haven't even seen the pictures yet. She couldn't wait to show me all the cool clothes she bought, though! Now, maybe my writer's block will go away! I been able to write or think about anything but her!

  • Camille is in France!

I have to write a retraction of my recent hub, Approaching an Empty Nest. I was totally unprepared for what a "baby" I would be when my "baby" headed across the Atlantic Ocean. It started Sunday night. Ken & I took a ride Saturday to eastern NC to look at houses. When Camille got home Sunday night, she asked why we were looking at houses in Jamesville and informed me, "YOU CAN'T MOVE AWAY! I HAVE ANOTHER YEAR LEFT!" After she went to bed, I boo-whoo'd my way through my journals from my trip to Great Britain when she was only three. I'm very excited for her, and I wouldn't say I am worried, just ridiculously emotional. Her flight out from RDU was delayed last night, so I was able to keep in touch via text message for a while. She sounded fine, of course, and she called me when they finally made it to DC. She said they were "power walking" through the airport and she had to pee and was afraid she wouldn't have time before they boarded again. But she sounded good. Today is Doug's birthday so he got the first call from France - and he missed it! But he called to tell me she had left a voice mail, she sounded good and in a hurry, and they lost her luggage!!! Poor thing! I hope she makes it to an internet cafe soon and catches us all up with some details. I know she will be home before I can blink, and if she was home she wouldn't be here...she'd be off with her friends. But I miss her!
