Wanting a contemporary style for your home simply means that you like styles that are up with the time. You want to incorporate things that are current. You also like those that are modern. Usually, this style is associated with coldness and minimalism. However, the contemporary style is no longer limited to this concept. A contemporary style today also suggests having a comfortable, sophisticated and relaxing space.

A living area with contemporary style is a perfect place for one to go home after a tiresome day at the office. This allows him to sit, relax and rejuvenate. He does not have to worry about tipping on a collection of figurines because there are fewer items in the room. The environment also feels serene because it is clutter-free. Sounds easy to have, but how do you achieve a contemporary look for your living room? Can you do it by adding or changing your wall decor? If you are to renovate your room, what changes should you make?

If you want to have a comfortable contemporary room, you have to focus on a few elements. These include choice of color, shape and consideration of space.

The color

The color palette for contemporary style includes the shades of black, white and of the neutral colors. This is a wonderful base for any design because it goes well with all the other colors. You can choose a lighter shade on the wall and pick a much darker shade for your key furniture like the table, chairs, couches, rugs and shelves. Since you have neutral shades on the wall and on the big pieces in the room, you can introduce vibrant colors for the accessories. Think of the pieces you want in the room. Remember, fewer items are better. Remember, space is an essential element of the contemporary style.

The space

Space in the contemporary style is always associated with lines. This is evident in the many architectural details you will see in the different contemporary houses. There are also distinct and artistic designs for the furniture and decoration. A good example would be the contemporary wall art. There are several of these available today. The artwork has several interesting, clean and sexy lines. Placing this on a bare wall really makes a statement.

As mentioned earlier, space is vital for the style. You do not have to fill it with vases, pots, figurines and other accessories. Less decorative elements makes the room look peaceful and elegant. The style uses what the room already has. If it has exposed pipes, you can incorporate it in the design. You can make it an interesting architectural touch by painting it with a contrasting shade. However, if you do not want it to draw attention, you can just paint it with the same paint it has in the background.

The shape

The furniture used in a contemporary style has clean, geometric and smooth shapes and lines. They are normally angled and straight. The shapes used are very simple yet sophisticated. They do not take much of the space as well.

Now that you already have a basic understanding of the elements used in contemporary style, you can start redecorating your living area. Before you remove all the furniture in the room and start painting, make sure that you know how you want the room to look like. There is more to redecorating it than just wall décorand paint. You can follow these steps:

  1. Evaluate the room

Evaluating the room before you come up with a plan is necessary because this will help you create a plan that will address the needs of the room. Does the fireplace need updating? Do you need to add moldings? How large is your space? What are the items you need to remove and reuse? What are the areas of the room you can work with? Maybe you can use the empty space for your wine rack.

2. Be inspired

Even professional designers need inspiration. You can do this by checking out the different sites online. You can also browse through the pages of the magazine. You can window shop and be inspired by some of the coolest contemporary furniture available to you. You might even find a contemporary wall art, perfect for your plan.

3. Come up with a plan

After being inspired by the different materials, pieces and furniture, it is time to draw a plan. A plan will give you a visual interpretation of how you want your room to look like. You can start with a theme. There is wide range of themes to choose from under the contemporary style. It can be art deco, modern, retro or urban.

You can also start on the focal point of the room. If you want it to be the conversation area, then work around it. If you want it to be the fireplace, find a way to make it stand out. You can paint it with a darker color, add panels or probably add awall décor above it.

Complete your plan and list the projects you need to do. You also have to develop a system on how to go about your redecorating projects. This will make your activities orderly. It will also make your monitoring task much simpler.

 4. Brief your team and assign tasks

After developing a plan, talk to the people who will be helping you out. Remember, you will need a lot of help for this project. Let them know how to go about the plan. If you are going to build storage boxes for the room, make sure you provide a plan to the carpenter. For your friends who will do the painting, make sure they know which paint color to use. You do not want to accidentally paint the wall black.

5. Execute the plan

When everyone is aware of what to do, you can start executing your plan. Paint the room with the neutral shade, bring the furniture in and add accessories and contemporary wall art for the finish.
