There are a number of things you can do to avoid becoming a victim of fraud:

Always keep your PIN safe. PINs and passwords for debit and credit cards are the easiest way for criminals to access accounts. Always keep yours safe, and avoid using codes that can be easily cracked such as memorable birthdays, names etc.

Invest in a shredder. The best types are Cross Cut Shredders used to destroy documents that carry some reference to sensitive information. This will prevent the data from falling into the wrong hands and being used for criminal activity. Any unwanted bank statements, or any other documents baring your name/address/telephone number should also be shredded.

Use anti-virus software. Installing the latest anti-virus software is highly recommended, allowing you to be protected from online fraudsters. You can download good anti-virus software for free (search for free anti-virus software) so it is well worth doing.

Always check bank and credit card statements and become aware when such documents are due. If you see a transaction that looks suspicious, immediately contact your bank or building society. Also if your bank or credit card statements fail to arrive on the expected date, contact your provider to ensure they were not intercepted in the mail.

Check your credit reference files on a regular basis. One method of fraud commonly used is by applying for credit in your name. By checking your credit reference files you will be able to see any credit activity. It is recommended that you should check these at least once a year.

Fraudsters work by collecting different pieces of information about their victims and using these to build up a profile. There are several methods used to acquire this information, such as going through trash to find documents, and intercepting mail.

This information can then be used to apply for various products, which could effectively cause you big problems and damage your credit history. You will limit this possibility if you take the right precautions.

Phishing is a technique used to gather unsuspecting victims personal details by posing as a legitimate company. This can be done by setting up websites, or contacting victims by by post or phone, claiming to be from your bank. Always be cautious when dealing with sensitive data. Check any links provided in email claiming to be from your bank to ensure you are not being re-directed to a hoax website. These hoax sites can be duplicates of a genuine site and can be very convincing. They are designed to take your details without you knowing foul play was involved.

Under no circumstances should you ever reveal your PIN to anyone. You are never expected to give your PIN out so don't do it. Try not to give out personal details that you may use as passwords (e.g. date of birth, mother's maiden name) onto social-networking websites such as Facebook, this just puts you at risk.
