What is Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary Hypertension is a rare disease. This is a disease where there is elevated blood pressure in the lungs. This means that there is either high blood pressure in the lungs or a build up of blood in the lungs. Pulmonary function tests, which measures how much air goes in and out of the lungs is a good way of seeing if you have the disease. A CT angiogram is also done, this shows the pulmonary vein structure so that doctors can measure the severity of the disease.

Unfortunately there is no cure for Pulmonary Hypertension. There are a number of ways that the pressure build up in the lungs can be deflated. This can make a person have a prolonged life, reduce symptoms, and be more active.

Here are a few things that can be taken:

Sildenafil: This drug opens up the blood vessals in the lungs not allowing blood to build up in the pulmonary arteries.

Anticoagulants: These are used to thin the blood and prevents clotting.

Diuretics: Medicine that helps remove excess fluid from the lungs that may be caused from high blood pressure in the blood vessels

Oxygen: By getting an oxygen tank a person will have a high concentration of oxygen then what is normally inhaled. This makes it a lot easier for a person with pulmonary hypertension to breath.

Transplant: In some cases a lung implant may be neccessary. This is a big surgery so it is usually only suggested in younger patients.

Pulmonary Hypertension is a disease with no cure but these are the ways that a person can adapt and live a normal life.
