How to bring on labor naturally
72At the beginning of your pregnancy it seems like the days fly by, but when you're near the end it seems that they crawl by. One day can seem like a week, especially when your due date has come and gone. My son was two pounds bigger than my daughter and the last month was horrible. It seemed like I was going to be pregnant for ever. With him being that much bigger it was very hard to get comfortable.
They had given me two different due dates and they both had come and gone. I was going to the doctor every other day to check my progress. Finally my doctor decided she was going to schedule an induced labor in two days. Well my son had other plans and decided he was going to come that night.
There are many ways that you can induce labor naturally. You should not try these if you have not reached your 40th week. So if you due date has come and gone and would like to take matters in your own hands there are a few things you can try.
Sexual intercourse is one method that works to help induce labor. When you reach climax and have an orgasm this can stimulate contractions. Also you partners sperm contains prostaglandins which will soften your cervix.
Walking or going up and down stairs may help to start the labor process. Some believe that it helps your baby get into a better position for labor. The pressure that the baby puts on your cervix while walking may also help get things rolling.
Spicy food and pineapple are believed to help induce labor. Spicy food may help to stimulate the digestive system. Which can cause your body to naturally increase production of prostaglandins? There by helping to soften your cervix. Some women swear that eating pineapple helps to induce labor, but there is no scientific data proving or disproving it.
Nipple stimulation is another method of natural labor induction. Massaging the nipples causes the body to release Oxytocin. Oxytocin is a natural form of potocin which is one way they induce labor in the hospital. Do not use nipple stimulation with out your doctor's approval. This can cause extremely strong uterine contraction that can result in the baby's heart rate to drop.
Remember before using any of these methods to induce labor to discuss them with your doctor. Your due date is a guess not an exact science. You want to give your baby enough time to fully develop. If you doctor has decided it is time to induce labor you can discuss these methods with him or her. They will be able to suggest the best options for you and may even have some more suggestions than those listed here.

I have heard of all of these methods (I work at a women's hospital and have a child as well) and although they did not work for me personally, I'm sure they work for many others.
You included valuable info that I'm sure will help many weary 40+ weekers! Great hub!
