How to build a desk - simple steps

Make it yourselves- Desk

Simple study desk making tips as follows;

Tools required

  • Hack saw
  • 2" nails & 11/2" nails
  • Wood glue preferably Pvac (branded one).
  • pencil
  • Hammer
  • straight edge
  • clamps
  • tape measure
  • paint brush
  • polyurethane two pack
  • sanding sealer
  • sand paper ( emery sheet)
  • Drilling machine - manual or electric or battery operated.
  • cupboard locks

Timber

  • Sized and planned timber.
  • Blockboard or laminated chip board or wood planks (25mm thick)
  • wooden or plastic beadings. 
  • wood stain oil based.

1. Choose the size you want to make. Normally the width to length proportion is 1:2;

2. Once you have choosen the size then you go for height. Normally the height is 3'.

3. Make a rough sketch ; so that you may able to introduce the drawers if needed;

4. choose the seasoned timber from timber merchant.Normally the legs are made out of 2"x2" timber.

5. Get it planned all around.

6. Prepare the table top. Either block board or laminated chipboard or planned timber pieces which is joined together.

7. Prepare the drawer either with timber or blockboard or chip board. The drawer sizes varies with usages.

8.start joining the legs to top then drawers.

9. Do the painting or staining or simple varnish depends on the material you use.

10. Your desk is ready for use.

When you want to Choose the wood pieces better go for kiln seasoned one. This will give you good finish. And follow the some instructions for good finish for your desk.

  • Start with rough sanding paper initial stage
  • Then go with another two types of smooth one to get the nice finish.
  • Apply clear varnish or paint depends on wood. Choose the clear varnish with matt finish, for long lasting . If you choose glossy finish, it may fade to a given time.
  • Nearly three coat of varnish will give you good finish
  • Protect your desk top from scratches.
  • Maintain by doing yearly or two years once varnishing.
