So what are VOB files
VOB files to video object files is the file format you will find on most dvd's these days. When you open up a dvd you will see an VIDEO_TS folder and an AUDIO_TS folder and inside the folders you will see files with the extensions
.VOB , .BUP and .IFO
.IFO = information file on .vob files, you can't play these files directly
.BUP = Backup of .IFO file
.VOB = Video object, your actual video
Burning VOB Files
Generally burning VOB files can be done quite easily using the latest version of NERO , but there are other methods that make it easier such as converting VOB files into simple AVI's and burning the files from there.
I will go through both methods
Burning VOB files with Nero - So the steps are very simply when you have all the .ifo .vob and .bup files when burning the files, otherwise you may need to use IFOedit to create a IFOedit file , otherwise using DVD Shrink will work very well.
- Open up Nero and Click to create DVD video files DVD
- Add your .bup .ifo and .vob file to the DVD
- Click Next and Burn
Nero version may differ and I believe anything from version 6 should be able to handle VOB files.
Combining VOB files from different sources
Sometimes you want to make a CD or DVD made up of VOB files from different sources and this willl mean you need .IFO and .BUP files for the DVD to work properly.
There is a freeware IFO creation tool out there called
IFOedit Instructions can be found here (ONLY HAVE VOB FILES USE THIS or DVD SHRINK (easier) )
Another great tool out there to combine vob files from different sources is DVD Shrink
Get DVD Shrink here - this is a great tool for creating DVD's really simply and takes no real knowledge of encoding or anything like that.
Programs for Video , Coverting, Sound Editing
If you prefer to put the DVD together piece by piece you can use the following programs which are all FREEWARE
IFOedit - IFO file
DVDSHRINK - Burning the VOB files or creating dvd's from AVI files, my favourite by far
DVD Decrypter - Decrypt VOB file back into more usable video file, ripping DVD's, good for making backup's of your DVD's
VirutalDUB - video and audio editor
Playing VOB files
You can also play the VOB files directly without burning them to the DVD, so its really simple to keep a backup of your DVD on your computer simply copy the contents of your DVD.
Now you can play those files with VLCplayer , PowerDVD or most other video players.
