If you are a go-getter type, then you will want to try calling the companies you desire to work for. Most employers like the motivation behind the call. You might just land the position you were hoping for, if the call is done right. There are a few things to keep in mind when making your call; always have a pen and paper handy before dialing the number, keep your inquiry short, and make sure you give your important information such as your name, experience, and phone number.

First step is to write down all of the information you want them to have. This will save you time and show that you are prepared. Also, having a cue card will enable you to remember all the questions you have. Having a list of the companies and their numbers will also come in handy. Jot the reasons you want to work for them down next to each name. Be aware of the position it is you are looking to fill. Empoyers want to hire someone they know does their homework. 

Be prepared to answer their questions as well. Employers usually want to know your experience, education, qualifications, and why you want to work for them. Keep your answers short, but speak with confidence and enthusiasm.

  When calling, be sure to ask for human resources or the supervisor. You want to be sure to direct your call to the person of interest; the secretary should only be given your full name and your request to speak with his/her superior. If the person on the phone asks to take a message, politely decline and ask for the best time to reach the person in charge of hiring. Leaving a message does not give off confidence or motivation.

Some places of employment do not hire unless they are approached. Even better, would be to take your resume and go to these employers in person. They will keep your resume on the top because of your efforts. In fact, this was the key to me scoring my machinist position working in an all male machine shop. The employer was able to see that I was physically capable and he also got to know me on a more personal level. Besides, a good hand shake can never be replaced.

Whether you call or go in, you have already taken a step in the right direction. If you are turned down, call back every couple of months, you will get noticed! Do not be harrassing or annoying as this will only get your resume dropped in the wastebasket. Remember, these are potential employers, you want to put your best foot forward.
