How to check CPU temperature:A complete guide to Check CPU temperature through BIOS or software on all operating system
81While CPU is running, it produces heat. CPU is an electronic device. It is very urgent to remove heat from electronic devices as soon as possible. Otherwise the internal temperature will be increased. If the device is too hot (internally), then the internal circuits may be damaged or burned. Similarly, if heat in very excess, then CPU may be burned. Every day lots of people search How to check CPU temperature, CPU temperature monitoring software etc. through Google. Actually, CPU monitoring is really an important issue. I will discuss later paragraphs about this. Moreover, there are lots of CPU monitoring software. So, people always pay a little attention before choosing any CPU monitoring software. This page contains information how to check CPU temperature through BIOS or motherboard software or other third party software. Moreover, this page contains information about the symptoms of high CPU temperature, how to solve overheating CPU temperature problem etc. From this page, you will find the solution of CPU temperature checking for all operating system like Windows 7, Windows XP, Vista, Linux etc.
Effects of high temperature on any CPU
Every CPU has a maximum bearable temperature which is set by it's manufacturer. If CPU temperature is beyond that bearable temperature, the following problems may occur easily:
- The life-span time of CPU is reduced.
- CPU freezes randomly
- CPU resets randomly and your computer restarts.
- Lastly, CPU can burn
What are the symptoms of high CPU temperature?
There are some symptoms by which you can easily figure out that the temperature of computer CPU is not in good temperature i.e. CPU temperature is increased beyond it's bearable condition. Some of the symptoms may:
- At the loading or installing time of operating system, PCs give the infamous blue screen.
- It is also seen that your computer is working correctly but after some time it starts to malfunction.
- It is also seen that your PC is running very smoothly but all on a sudden it restarts.
How to solve overheating CPU temperature problem?
To solve overheating CPU temperature problem, you may take the following things:
- To use best thermal casing which is suitable for your computer CPU.
- To use those types of fans and coolers which has better capabilities to reduce temperature.
- To minimize the room temperature.
- To enhance the computer case internal air flow.
CPU temperature measuring
There are three basic ways to measure the temperature of CPU and motherboard:
- Through the BIOS
- Through motherboard software or
- Through other third party software.
The first choice is not operating system dependent i.e. it does not matter whether your computer operating system is Windows or Linux or any other operating system. But for the other choices you have to select suitable suitable software to measure the CPU temperature.
Measuring or checking CPU temperature through computer BIOS:
To check CPU temperature, you must have to entered the BIOS of your computer. Sometimes BIOS is referred as System or Setup. Follow the following steps to check or measure CPU temperature or motherboard temperature or System temperaturel.
At first power on your computer. If you are already powered on of your computer, then you have to restart your computer.
Press Del key or F2 key to Enter BIOS. It is mentionable that there are several types of motherboard. To access BIOS, some motherboard requires Del key, others require F2 key or other type of key. If you don't know the actual key then just after boot up your computer, press Pause/Break key of your computer keyboard. Now, read the lower writings of your monitor. Probably, you will see the instructions to access BIOS.
After accessing BIOS, navigate to PC Health Status or System Health or Sensor or somthing similar.
From here, you can easily figured out CPU temperature, motherboard temperature or system temperature etc.
Measuring or checking CPU temperature through motherboard's software
Every motherboard has at least one CD which contains the drivers software or other necessary software of your computer. Currently, there are many motherboard manufacturers in the market. The software of one brand or model does not support the other brand or model. So, you need the software of your own motherboard company. If you don't have the CD, you may download them form the Internet.
This motherboard CD typically contain some extra software. One of them are the motherboard monitoring software, CPU temperature monitoring software, fan speed monitoring software etc. You just need to install the motherboard monitoring software. It generally resides in the Motherboard folder.
Now, if you browse to your motherboard CD, you will easily figure out that there are software for Windows XP or Vista or Windows 7 or Linux.
Just install it and then you can easily monitor to CPU temperature or motherboard temperature or system temperature.
Measuring or checking CPU temperature through third party software
YOu can measure or monitor CPU temperature form BIOS at the start up time of your computer or you need to restart your computer. So, it's quite hard to do in this way. There is an alternate solution of this. The solution is that by using another third party software instead of using your motherboard manufacturer's software.
There are lots of software in the market which can measure CPU temperature. Most of the cases it is seen that these software are not capable only measure CPU temperature but also capable a lot of other things too like measuring temperature of motherboard, CPU voltage, CPU speed etc.
Now, I will tell you some of those software names and some little description of them. Remember, I am not the owner or not an affiliate any of these software. I just use them and find good performance about those.
Everest
Everest is one of the best software so far I used and still using. It requires very less memory and processing power to run. I'm really a good fan of Everest. You can run it in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 also. This great software is capable of monitoring CPU temperature.
During system optimizations and tweaking it provides essential system and overclock information, advanced hardware monitoring and diagnostics capabilities to check the effects of the applied settings. FPU, CPU and memory benchmarks are available to measure the actual system performance for comparing it to previous states or other PCs.
If you want to use the latest version, then you can use it as a one month trial [click here to download trial version] and then you have to buy it. But I have a home edition version which you can easily use without any limitation. This is totally free. Since I find it as a great software, I upload it and you can easily download it form the following link:
Speedfan
SpeedFan is another great software to measure temperature of CPU. The user interface of SpeedFan is very user friendly. SpeedFan is a freeware program that monitors CPU temperature and can also do a lot more. For example, by using it you can monitor hard disk temperature, voltage and also control fan speed.
SpeedFan is to show its user what's really going in their machine. When minimized, a temperature reading is showed on the button right of the desktop. When Speedfan is in an open window you can see a whole lot more. From Fan speed to total voltage, you can view any and all of the current fans.

CPU temperature measuring in Linux
You can also check the CPU temperature in Linux. There are several software to check CPU temperature. Some of them are the followings:
- lm-sensors can detect, display and configure monitoring parameters for Linux system.
- GKrellM is just a visual framework for the environmental control functions of Linux and you can monitor many system resources at a glance, or control how the display of that data is provided.
And this is all about to check CPU temperature. If you have any query then you may ask in the comment section. I will try to solve your query.
